I was at the mall today in Kingston doing some Christmas shopping. I stopped in at the calendar store. There were calendars for all sorts of things. What stood out to me was the Major League Lacrosse (outdoor lacrosse) calendar. This a smaller, younger league with a much smaller fan base than the CFL and only one 2-year-old Canadian team. But there was no CFL calendar, despite what one would think are a number of advantages over the MLL.
It's just a calendar, which is a pretty small thing. But it's just another reminder of the deficiencies of the CFL merchandise marketing machine in the Southern Ontario market. I know the CFL struggles for fans in Southern Ontario, but surely the fan support can't be that dismal around here that even the MLL is an easier sell than the CFL.
(This is not to knock the MLL or lacrosse, of course. But, as mentioned, they haven't been around nearly as long, and their presence in Canada is very very short by comparison. There's no question which of these leagues has more cultural significance.).
At the calender stores that open up here around Xmas I dont think there are CFL ones here either. I remember there being MLB (like 3 Blue Jays ones lol and a couple other teams), NFL (like 6 teams, none of which was Philly which sucks for me), Hockey (I think 3 or 4 of the Canadian teams). So even in Regina no CFL ones.
I think just about every team's cheerleading team sells calendars. Maybe the league doesn't want to encroach on their revenue source?? Not making excuses, just trying to grasp for a possible explanation.
I’ve been whining for a while about wanting a Bomber beefcake calendar but all they sell are cheerleader calendars and I’m sure as heck ain’t gonna buy one of those*. Whether it be beefcake or action shots, I don’t care - if there was a Bomber player calendar I would buy it.
I'm pretty sure you can walk into Cantire for just about anthing rider in Regina. You can't miss, it and I bet there is some sort of calender in there. They sell almost anything in green, of course they did not have rider rat traps....would have been my first rider related purchase...maybe next year. Serisously, they have almost everything green...still blows me away.
I know! I’m a rider fan living in edmonton and it still blows me away when I go back home and see so many people wearing Rider gear on any given day of the week, even when the season is over.
