World Hockey Championship 2025

Reading the summary, Binnington had made several stops to keep them in it.

And the Danish goalie Dischow stood on his head.

Still, having the likes of Crosby, Mackinnon, Celebrini and only managing one goal.

Jets player Ehler popped the first goal I believe.

Yes Ehlers scored the only goal in their shootout win that got them in the playoffs as well. He’s done a lot for them in the two games he has played. I saw an interview of him yesterday and he was very proud and excited to be part of the team and see his friends. He always plays for Denmark in this tourny unless hurt and I believe he is the only current Danish NHL’er.

Ehlers late game tying goal was NOT heroic. It was a looper from the blue-line that holed its way thru traffic and beat a forlorn Jason Binnington. Obviously, the Canadian team were homesick or somesuch - scoring only one goal against an unproven team of non-NHL’rs is something else. Or perhaps it isn’t.
Denmark will get themselves drubbed in their next outing - the semi-final.
Also amazed Team USA has advanced. . . . . without the two animals (Tkachuk brothers) in their lineup. Good on them - Finland is usually their kryptonite but the Americans squashed the Feisty Finns.
Should be Sweden/USA final.

I have to think the American upset of the Mighty Russians at the Olympics still ranks as the top upset in International Hockey - either Worlds or Olympics but this one provided a major sting to Canadian hockey - which is already reeling after our girls were squashed by the Americans at worlds - and the randy-dandy juniors are still under a rape and/or sexual assault trial in Ontario.
btw - I have an idea how the rape trial ends. The juniors have done a good job muffling words and forgetting stuff - the judge will find a verdict that doesn’t provide jail time but gives the juniors a stern warning and possible fines. No way does a canadian/ontario judiciary indict Canadian junior hockey in a significant way. Just not possible. The judge has to live amongst the same people she would be indicting so the slap on the wrist penalties will be invoked.

Bodes well for the sport of hockey though that a small country like Denmark can perform to this level, sure would have loved to seen Canada win it but sort of nice to see the Danes pull a big upset like this.
Well said, a good job muffling words and forgetting stuff, yes sir. A few fake tears as well perhaps for good measure? hmmm

Finland isn’t much of a force because 13 of their best players are still playing in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Pretty amazing how good they are when everyone is available. There is an article on this today on TSN which I will post in the NHL playoff thread.

For posterity and/or for those who haven’t seen or read any details of Canada’s stunning loss the story is below.

The Canadian sports commentary community (particularly hockey) is having a most difficult time framing Canada’s stunning loss to the dwarfish Finns. Kinda like David slaying Goliath way back when.
One thing I hadn’t thought of is the Danes play with reckless abandon even when pitted against superior players with superior skill, size and strength.
The Canucks - well, to be honest CANNOT PLAY WITH RECKLESS ABANDON. WHY NOT? Well, it kinda has to do with their contracts and playing careers. Guys like Crosby, McKinnon, etc. have to play with less abandon to protect their careers. Of course, Crosby has maybe 1 or 2 more years before stepping up into ownership or management (he’ll never coach) while Nathan has up to a decade remaining in his star lit career. Same with many other Canadian players but at lower levels.
Prolly the same reason guys like Helleybuyck didn’t Jet overseas to backstop USA - obviously they don’t need him very much. Same with Kyle Connor although I’m pretty sure Team USA management refrained from inviting the Jets sniper - due to his obvious defensive liabilities. Wonder about Andy Samberg (USA) and Neal Pionk (Canada) as late roster add-ons. Also, Matthews (USA). Obviously, Mark Schiefele is excused due to personal circumstances. Switzerland prolly passed on Neiderreiter due to slow footspeed on larger international rinks.

Neidereitter has played the last two games for Switzerland and has at least two assists. Not many players head over after being eliminated in the second round as the teams are already set and have played together for some time and have only one or two games left. The two Jets are the exception (there may be a couple of others) and Ehlers in particular is by far the best player his country has.

For posterity here is the write up on the extremely close and nail biting final game:

Although not a major blip on my radar, I am still disappointed with the US victory considering their attitude towards Canada since some kind of thing happened in January of this year. Not a fan of a bunch of bullies. Switzerland would never be so obnoxious. Arrogant yes.

Sweden easily beats the apparently for Canada unbeatable Danes in the bronze medal game:
