Couldn’t bring the XFL to Canada but this might happen.
Interesting that he isn’t going through MLSE - also interesting that he is buying a WNBA expansion franchise - From all I have ever read about the WNBA is that it is a money pit, but he is the NBA chairman of the board of governors.
WNBA games get horribly low attendance. The NBA loses millions every year funding it. I doubt they have any desire to expand.
Also the NFL hasn’t yet given him word to pursuit a franchise from their club vigorously as he quoted back in 2007 or 2008.
What’s sad is that even women aren’t into the WNBA.
Comedian Bill Burr has a bit on this that is funny - there are more women than men - if they wanted to make the WNBA a success, they could just on sheer numbers - but they would rather watch the Kardashians and the Bachelorette.
With the Bay Area getting an expansion team and Portland reportedly falling through, it only makes sense to add another team to keep the schedule even. The WNBA exhibition game in Toronto last May easily sold out. Ratings and attendance have been on the rise the past few years. While the league still operates at a loss, it’s supposedly in the ~$20 million range. Not a huge amount for a 10-12 team circuit.
Most NBA owners jettisoned their teams the first chance they got. Cleveland Houston Charlotte and Sacramento were the first to pull the rip cord. Houston won the first 4 titles. Miami and Portland had teams that lasted like 2 seasons. Golden State has the huge new building - sell some T-Shirts and popcorn get people into the building, that is a progressive market that will probably do okay.
The Aces are the first WNBA team to sell out their allotment of season tickets, 8600 to be exact. A number that surpassed the Argos and Al’s and easily more than any spring football team not named the St. Louis Battlehawks.
