Will we ever have a CFL video game?

I just bought NCAA 08 for my PS2. I love playing college football games. Madden... not so much. But when I did play Madden I always played with the NFLE teams. Now that the NFLE is gonzo... do you think we'll ever see CFL teams/rules make an appearance on Madden? I think that a CFL exclusive video game would be kind of garbage. Considering that there are only 8 teams and that no ther video game company has ever impressed me with their football games other than EA sports.

I'm going off track here...

Will we ever see a CFL game?

Only when the market is viable.

And when will that be?

The CFL is doing very well in Canada right now. I figure that Madden football adds the 8 CFL teams and the CFL rules to their game and they sell at least another 1 million copies of the game.

For many reasons...

  • Canadians that are dying for a CFL game.
  • Canadians and Americans that buy the game simply because of the variety that the new teams bring.
  • Friends and family of American players in the CFL that want to buy a game that their friend/family member is in.

And it adds publicity. That i think is most important.

NCAA Football 08 is out already for PS2? I got 07, but NCAA games are so fun, and since i got the game last year, i have become a huge NCAA fan. Maybe that could happen to fans in America if a CFL game was made.

Exactly. Especially with today's kids spending more time online and playing video games.

Enter my make-believe world...

NCAA fans (there are millions of them) follow their team religiously... A few hundred Hawaii fans decide to check out ticats.ca to follow their hometown hero, Timmy Chang.

Then they find out that Timmy and his Tiger-Cats are now available on Madden football. They make SURE to buy it.

Same goes for fans of EVERY NCAA team that has had players move on to the CFL. Players like Richie Williams and his Appalachian State days.

RUSTY,,,,IS THIS THE JODWAY

Its doubtful we'll see a Madden-style CFL game anytime soon. The economics just don't work out.

It costs a good $15-20 million dollars to make a video game for the PS3Xbox 360. It still costs a good $5 million to make a video game for the WiiPS2. Considering the size of the video game market in Canada, its just not going to happen with those costs. You'd need to sell a good 500,000 copies for a PS3Xbox 360 game to break even, still a good 300,000 or so for a WiiPS2 game. Its especially true when you consider that the game would be competing against Madden to some extent, which itself doesn't sell that many copies in Canada each year.

Getting EA to add a 'CFL feature' to Madden is more plausible. Also a possibility... Nintendo and Microsoft are both allowing independent developers to 'homebrew' games that others can download for a price. A CFL game done this way wouldn't be on the same level as Madden, not even close actually, but it could be just as fun and it's more plausible.

Hey, i just seen a 2K8 All Pro Football commercial on TV.
Anyone know anything about this game?

Yes since the Can't use NFL or NFLPA Players
The Game uses Retired Players

I own All Pro Football 2k8...AMAZING, the graphics are beautiful and the game play is actually realistic, i think its a must buy for any football fan

In this years edition of the EA sports NHL franchise it's going to feature playable AHL teams, so ladies and gentlemen the first time this has been done will be the year that beside our beloved Hamilton Bulldogs it will feature Calder Cup Champions, so it's not unreasonable that something like that couldnt be done for the CFL in the madden franchise. Now I know the AHL and the NHL are partnerships but I'm sure the CFL wouldnt be against something like that it will get the name out and hopefully pull some more american fans into a better style of football. any moron could fall forward for 3 yards 4 times in a row to get a first down in the nfl

This is not the first time that AHL teams have been available. Wayne Gretzky 06 had playable AHL teams. I bought it JUST for hat reason. However, the game stunk so I think I played it about 3 times.

The only way a publisher will make a CFL game is if the CFL gives the rights away for free or the teams/league pitch in and help pay for some of the costs of developing a CFL game.

I believe if they make the game, people will buy it. But the problem is minimizing the publishers costs to get game engine built.

Hey, if EA sports can make a Rugby or Arena Football game. I believe there is enough of a marketing to make a CFL game.

BTW, I love NCAA 08 on my 360 but I never watch a NCAA football game on TV. So your theory on a game helps people become fans is not true. I play the game and buy it every year because its an excellent and enteraining game. And a CFL game would have to be developed to deliver the same thing.

And it can't be as simple as an ADDON to Madden. Too many rule changes and graphic updates that would have to be done to make sure its done right and not as a joke side note.

You make perfect sense here. I have the Arena Football game and it is extremely fun, however, i only watched a quarter of real game action on TV and i didnt like it at all. However, this publicity is a risk that i think the CFL should make.

What teams play and who are the players? (because i know it cant be the NFL because EA sports bought all of the rights) And can u really do the ICKY shuffle in the endzone? (man, i loved that celebrtaion. Too bad Icky Smith was injured so early in his career). And how much does it cost to buy the game?

I posted this in another thread in December about the idea of a CFL video game. I'll reproduce it here:

The only way I can see the CFL getting any Madden action would be to align itself with the NFL in its licensing arrangement with EA Sports or whichever company concludes a subsequent deal for exclusivity rights for a NFL video game.

The concept: you want to sign CFL players in their option year in a future accord, well we want our video game rights tied to yours as part of the agreement in lieu of some of the monetary compensation we'd expect.

Which means: all subsequent deals to allow for option-year signings would be contingent upon a condition (among whatever others) that a CFL-standalone video game or packaged component would be developed in conjunction with the NFL's exclusivity rights as part of its deal.

So Madden 2012 would have a CFL-rules option or you get "Don Matthews Football 2012" brought to you by "Mr. Wright" 2 in association with Roger Goodell.

The royalties issue would be interesting to ponder. What is the market for a CFL-only video game? If the answer is small (and that seems to be the EA Sports perspective from what I gather), than the CFL's asking price on that side would be comparatively small/miniscule/non-existent for all the exposure the brand would get.

The issue for me as a fan is making the Canadian-brand of football more visible to an international audience...what that translate into moneywise is not my abacus's affair.

One thing is for sure: more visibility video game-wise would help the CFL TV and broadband package internationally. It couldn't hurt. The tradeoff in tying CFL video game development to the NFL exclusivity monopoly would be to raise the visibility of the brand thereby.

From my vantage point, I don't see the CFL getting a video game that has anything near the market saturation possibilities that would be worth it unless it leveraged a deal alongside the NFL like I'm describing.

If that doesn't fly, the maximum to expect is the current operational minimum of Maximum Football, if you get my drift.

In EA hockey games you can play International rules...pretty significant changes to the ice surface and the rules. I know it's not quite the same, but it can't be a helluva lot different.

to the person that asked who you can be in all pro football

I am trying to make the Hamilton Tigercats in My Madden game and was wondering if someone could help me with the attributes and making the players with me.
