Will moving the goal posts back lead to more points scored?

That gimmick is the goal. It is akin to the hockey net which itself is not embedded in the boards but in the middle of the ice and not only placed for “shooting plays”.

They have been on the goal line since the sport’s inception. Before touchdowns themselves. So they are no gimmick. They are fundamental to football. I can accept their placement on the dead ball line. Rolling them on and off the field is a gimmick.

Everything appears different at the beginning,

Ages ago, Coca Cola believed they had a better coke. New coke was the biggest commercial flop. Did they need Reality to figure out they had a winner, no changes needed? And many times, a GM reports that the best trade they made was a No Trade.

Did Coke copy Pepsi or did Pepsi copy coke? There was much ado in the pop wars back in the day! Can you taste the difference? Nope! Then why bother with your product lol

But neither leagues made changes to the surface they’re playing on…

NFL didn’t narrow the field or shorten it. NHL didn’t make their ice 10 ft shorter or decrease the size of the nets.

NHL did have a mish mash of ice sizes. Boston used to be real short, more than 10 feet shorter. If they need to make new rules to create uniformity then so be it. Mtl and Tor are outside the mold right now and changes will fix that however minor it is.

Different ice rinks were different sizes like MLB ballparks.

Good thing you weren’t around when they introduced the forward pass.

American football originally featured a 110 yard field. To account for the forward pass in 1906 the concept of the end zone was introduced. To fit into already constructed stadiums such as Harvards from 1903, the decision was made to cannibalise 10 yards of field and extend 5 yards on each end to create 2x10 yard end zones.

So the NFL changed their field size to fit existing structures much like the CFL is doing now to become compatible with Soccer stadiums. Still maintain our justifications are garbage and a distraction from this truth. Then fifty years later the NFL moved the goal posts to the back because of serious injury and a death. Not because they thought it was necessary to improve the game.

Both leagues will continue to evolve but i hope to heck we do what’s best for our game and not to appease fans who like their game.

I mentioned doing just that on a prevoius post, along with inflatable goalposts that could be blown up and down after a FG attempt and NOBODY took me seriously! Probably because l was joking!

We go live now to unearthed video footage of the bygone prototype for inflatable goalposts …

Maybe we can have spinning goal posts

Big big bucks spent on that idea by the crack CFL development team. Sadly it didn’t get past the prototype stage.

What’s the story for those of you that are students at McGill? Any campus chatter in your classes about having portable goal posts to satisfy both Usports and the CFL? I dread seeing the Als moving back to Olympic stadium (formerly of the Expos) if McGill isn’t going to make the field playable for both Usports and the CFL.

Excuse me? Different rinks were from back from the 40s/50s like the Chicago Stadium and Boston Gardens. Buffalo also had a smaller rink. When they went to New rinks they had regulation size. The league has been 200x85 for many years but Chicago and Boston weren’t about to just change inside to get it there, now everyone has the same.

I’m talking modern football. I’m well aware of the changes they made before modern football was established. Before WW2

Portable goal posts are a non issue. Simply install base plates under the turf in each location and reposition the posts in minutes with a fork lift etc. If they are willing to play on a 100 as opposed to 110yd field then there is no reason that both post options aren’t easily possible.

In addition to having both goal post locations the schools who coexist on fields with the CFL could simply choose to adjust their starting points for kickoffs etc when on the shorter field. Move everything ten yards. Easy peazy for those leagues to adapt without going with the new CFL rules. And no real cost.

At any point down the road when all fields have been converted after their natural lifecycle then the schools can switch to CFL game play. Once again no extra cost.

Any comment about amateur options?

They seem to be putting that windmill up every time a Sask kicker attempts to hit between the uprights.
