This really bothers me, the Spec and CHCH have been portraying Bob and the Cats as a bad guy since all this began.
They have not reported neutrally on this and chearly have an agenda just like out city council.
Who own's these outlets?
I was just going to start a similar thread, but from another perspective.
I am seeing the emergence of a backlash against Bob Young and Scott Mitchell. It's no wonder Bob Young has been quiet so far.
Councillors of this city, (another city council quite wary), local media and citizens and even fans. Absolutely zero excitement or buzz out of Burlington from either councillors or the citizenry.
This is not good.
Damage control is in order now, before this spins out of control.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats simply cannot afford to lose the goodwill that has kept them afloat in this city for so long.
"Mark and Donna:
Very disappointed in your handling of the stadium issue!!!
Why on earth did you have two people as guests who were both opposed to the stadium and no-one on to rebut what they claimed and provide an alternate view?
I am glad Mark pointed out that they were commenting when they had not seen the proposal yet but other than that all you did was give opponents of a new stadium in the area an open mic for 10 minutes.
Their criticism almost amounted to calling Bob Young a crook.
It was a terrible piece of broadcasting. Slanted and poorly researched.
I agree with your “every issue needs both sides” of course. But, it was nice to get one side of the view without being cut-off and actual important facts stated that can be digested.
Now, Mitchell and Paletta should be interviewed.
Merulla did not get re-elected based on his stadium stance.
The guy is a fantastic "ward" councillor. He takes care of the East End of the City and the citizens problems in his area. If you have a problem in Ward 3, Sam is your guy.
On the other hand... Sam is a terrible councillor for furthering or enriching the lives of the entire city.
He is another NDP lefty (although a former Liberal when it suited him) who has done nothing to improve the image of our city in the broader sense.
Plus...he's a lifer. I would love to see term limits for guys like him.
Neither CHCH or the Spec are likely to give Young, Mitchell or anyone else from the Cats their time. There is a big reason why the Spec is the worst rag of a newspaper in Southern Ontario, actually makes the 2 big T.O. papers look semi-legit. As for CHCH, well they've tried for years to become a regional CTV/CBC type station, but failed miserably, there is much better Canadian TV available. Part of a city's image is it's media outlets and these 2 are a large part o' the reason why Hamilton has been called the "armpit of the nation".
Another reason why, I'm afraid, leagues like the CFL or OHL aren't going to be overly upset in the least if they don't have a team in their leagues with the name Hamilton.
But the “Hamilton spectator” is owned by the “Toronto Star”!!! the Atkinson foundation (owners) have an agenda to uphold Liberal values. It’s papers do have a left wing agenda especially in their “opinions” page and their editorials always take the Liberal left wing view. Just check out the Star and Specs editorials during elections - local/provincial or federal they always back the left.
As for CHCH, I don’t know if you know this but they are broadcast nationally. I used to watch it every night in Ottawa and my sister who lives in PEI keeps in touch of what is going on in Hamilton by watching CHCH news out there too.
The Spectator has made it seem like Goldring is dead set against the stadium. I heard Goldring interviewed on CHML yesterday, and he actually sounded quite open-minded and enthusiastic about the financial possibilities this project could bring to Aldershot. Yes, there are deadlines in place and some members of Burlington City Council are guarded, but I don't think it is as dark as The Spectator constantly reports it as being.
I’m impressed Mike, not many people are aware of the Star’s inherent bias. I once had a lengthy email debate with one of their columnists and she didn’t know what the Atkinson Principles were. I won’t name names but her initials bookend the alphabet. For all the flak the National Post gets they have always offered space to contrary positions: Buzz Hargrove, Sheila Copps, Linda McQuaig, etc. You won’t find a conservative voice in the Star (or publically funded CBC for that matter).
The Star and Spec are socialist trumpets heavily prejudiced against business and entrepreneurs like Bob Young. In their warped little minds we are all supposed to work for the state, obey our leaders, and not have an independent or contrary thought.
These are some very good posts on this thread so far. I agree with all of them.
It has been known for some time that the Toronto Star and consequently, the
Hamilton Spectator are leftist papers. They thrive on going against the grain
if and whenever it serves their own set of biases.
In terms of Mark and Donna on their Square Off show, the interviews with two
people dead set against a stadium was ill advised, but typical of that station's
leftist attitude.
