Dinwiddie did look good, but so did Bergqquest. Both moved the ball well. The things i liked slightly better in Bergquest was he looked down 2-3 receivers each pass, Dinwiddie did not as much so. Both rolled well. either way it goes, I think these guys should be #2 and 3.
^^ I agree. Berqquest looked like a starter with his TD pass to Brown. He moved from his first two reads, settled in and threw an especially nice pass with a brutal wind at his back.
I know this is beyond hypothetical, but if it comes down to two equal talents vying for #2 spot , do the coaches go for the guy who is most likely to remain a Rider (Dinwiddie) , or the guy, who like so many recent Rider backups, feels the need to test the markets and be #1.
This is an obvious consideration, as is the fact that you may very well lose a QB to Ottawa in the expansion draft.
I would think that AC will “stay on” in Montreal and AJ will be protected. Ottawa won’t select AC because they know they MIGHT get one season from him…he will retire after the expansion draft. Santos might get a look from them.
Lulay will be safe in BC, Printers may be up for grabs.
Don’t know enough about the backups in Edmonton to comment
Printers will be protected in the Peg if he is injury free, Elliot may be a target.
Glenn should be safe in Hamilton
I have to believe Jyles will be the man in TO
I have to think that the #1 target if unprotected will be Tate from Calgary. I am actually impressed that he signed on again to backup Burris. I feel he could be a starter now.
—All that being said, there are going to be a couple QBs missing off rosters come expansion draft. Furthermore, most QBs are going to look elsewhere if it gives them a better chance of moving up the ladder. I think Dinwiddie will make the team this year, yes, largely because they know he probably is not going anywhere. Like I said, I think the real question is who is the 3rd QB? Bergquest and Leak are the same age. Neither has much for CFL game experience (Leak has actually did play a bit in Montreal), therefore age/experience can basically be thrown out the window. Based only on the first pre-season game, I have to think Leak has his work cut out for him to make the squad. Cole knows the team, knows the playbook, looked better, has paid his dues with the team by sitting on the sidelines. Leak needs to learn the system, and meld with the team. Unless there is a huge salary difference, or Leak plays amazing in the next game and Cole poorly, or there is something big we are not aware of, I think one must stick with Cole Bergquest.
I agree and if there were a QB Ottawa is targeting from the Riders it could be any three of these guys… Durant I feel and hope that we’d have him locked up for a long time before it comes to the draft…
There are arguments to be had for both sides. I think that since the Roughriders are one of the “elite” teams in the league right now, its better to have a back up with some experience. That way if DD goes down, the guy coming in won’t be like a deer in the headlights and the team should keep on firing. If that situation happens and your back up is inexperienced, the losses could start piling up pretty fast. If your like Edmonton and rebuilding with a starter as old as Ray, is Joseph a good idea as your back up? I doubt it. A young guy to develop is a better idea by far.
BUT.....Just because Dinwiddie is the oldest of the quarterbacks on the roster, does that give him the experience? No. I believe his first and last start was the 07 Grey Cup. Judging by performances on Friday night, I say its a toss up between Dinwiddie and Berquist at this point, and Wednesdays game will reveal more. Leak I imagine will be released. Berquist and Dinwiddie both know the system, and both looked substantially better than Leak.
Ray isn't old, he's only 31. He could be Edmonton's guy for the next seven or eight years, longer since he's never been the type to rely on his legs which means he could stay on top of his game into his '40s. Given where Ray is at, it makes sense to have a veteran QB backing him up. A young heir-apparent type would have to wait an awfully long time to take over.
I agree. He could be active for many moons yet. Look at AC…he didn’t hit his prime until 33
Contracts do not matter in expansion drafts. Teams can protect a certain number on imports and non-imports as well as a few other guidelines in there (the format for the Ottawa draft has been released already I believe if you want more details I could probably post a link). DD will be one of the safe / protected players barring some unforseen change of events over the course of this season.
I agree what has been said here as well, however I gave the thumbs up more so on the comment in the earlier post to develope a younger QB such as Nichols for #2 or whom ever that future player maybe once Ray decides to retire. Joseph is O.K. for now but in the long run…
