Well thiskeepw getting better... The 86 Cats got to the Grey Cup despite losing what should have been the semi final... Instead of doing the cross over the thingy, the league called an audible at the 11th hour had went old school. 1986 CFL season - Wikipedia
The Argos could have been the team of the 80s too though if they had been more clutch. The Argos appeared in the '82, '83 and '87 Grey Cups - winning in '83 - but lost the East Final at home in '84 (in OT to a Hamilton team they were much better than), '86 (the second game of a two game total point series with the hated Ticats), and '88 to a mediocre Winnipeg team after the Argos ran roughshod on the East Division that season.
Absolutely do remember,September 7/81 in the Labour day classic. I’m not quite sure why it was the Eskimos that we were playing on Labour day that season instead of the traditional Argonaut game, but looking back it was probably a blessing in disguise as the Argos were terrible that season and ended up only winning two games all year. I do remember everyone saying though that the game was a classic and an odds on favourite as a Grey Cup preview and like I said previously we all know how that worked out.
Yep, that turned out to be a fine Labour Day for Ticats fans and the stadium was packed although the Esks were a terrific draw back then for obvious reasons. The Argos played in Calgary that day and were blown out. That game was supposed to air on CBC but a strike at that network knocked a lot of CFL games off of TV, including Vince Ferragamo’s debut, until mid-September. The Esks/Ticats game aired in primetime on CTV though.
