As this news just hit yesterday we are still negotiating with the team on who will fill John's shoes. At this point, we are not ready to make a formal announcement.

while there at it replace the play by play caller. Have you ever tried to follow the play with him calling it.
Maybe Russ Jackson or Dave Marler..
Both have done the job Before..
You sure you want a guy with less credability than Chris Walby or Glen Suitor in your radio booth?
Marler might be a better hope than Russ, who is getting a bit elderly by now...though he is a thoroughly fine guy! Would love to have Russ do it, or at least "guest" on CHML, as his insights were always better than anyone else's...
Just have to respect his age, he might not want to do something as physically and mentally demanding as doing live colour commentary; that's got to be hard to do at any age...
Dave Marlor or Wally Zatylny.
As I live out-of-town, I listen to the 5th Quarter on my way home.
Coach Sal was okay, but way too "vanilla" in my opinion. You need someone to tell it like it is...at times it appeared/sounded like he was defending some of the obvious blunders that were made on the field which didn't do much for his credibility IMO...you can't have that if you're going to be objective. He may have been a little too close to the organization and/or players in that regard...it always seemed to be a little too "sugar-coateded" for me.
While I'm on the topic, how about screening some of those callers before going "live-on-the-air" with them...you know the one's I'm talking about...or do you really want to discuss football with some person who'd just consumed "mass quantities" of alcohol and has no idea what they're talking about?
Interesting, who's the boss? CHML or the TiCats. No wonder the commentary is sugar coated at times. Not a good idea to criticize the employer on the air.
Bring back John Michulack
He never pulled punches
If I had a vote it would be for Russ Jackson.
P.S.
Sal does a great job.
Granted he doesn't make harsh criticisms like an irrate fan might do
if that is what you mean by "sugar coating things, Cobra.
He knows instantly which player made a play fail or work
well before it has been shown on the TV replay.
He will tell us which player[s] missed his/their assignmet
He will tell us why a play was the wrong call
for that particular situation in the game.
He praises or criticizes the coaches for calling it
and the players who did a good or bad job on that play.
without getting highly emotional and accusatory about it.
Another of his alleged too "vanilla" opinions occurs when
we are far behind in the score and most frustrated fans
have given up hope that we can still win.
Sal, in his loyalty to the Ticats
and his employer, still holds out hope.
Good post ronfromtigertown!
So, do you think that Sal has the character to be in the players faces when they blow a blocking assignment? Is he a motivater? A communicator?
I'm interested in your (and others) opinions on this as I believe the O-line is our first fix.
Hi thecobra!
John Salavantis was the offensive line coach of the Ticats from 1985 to 1995. During his tenure, the team won a Grey Cup in 1986 and had two other Grey Cup appearances (1985 and 1989). He has the knowledge and the communication skills to help improve the performance of the current Ticat offensive line.
Marler might be a better hope than Russ, who is getting a bit elderly by now...though he is a thoroughly fine guy! Would love to have Russ do it, or at least "guest" on CHML, as his insights were always better than anyone else's...Just have to respect his age, he might not want to do something as physically and mentally demanding as doing live colour commentary; that's got to be hard to do at any age...
Russ is a contemporary of Lancaster (1 year older). Remember, they were the Ottawa tag-tam of QB's before Ronnie got traded. (I personally think they were THE best pair for a single team although there have been some great ones. Let's start a thread for this.)
Anyway- if Lancaster can stand the pressure onthe sidelines I think that Jackson (unless there's some health issue that we don't know about) can do colour commentary.
Sorry guys.... but 70 isn't necessarily the end of it all for a lot of people. Some are just beginning new careers. (Me, I've got 20 years or so to go.)
If I'm not mistaken Russ was the one who pulled the plug on his broadcasting career.
He put himself out to pasture.
He was a good one.
