In Canada, the majority of regular season and all playoff games are [televised on TSN]
Who gets those rights in 2026?
I personally would like to see it back on the CBC
But I don’t think they have the deep enough Pockets to get it back
I could see Sportsnet and CTV being the next home of the CFL
Or dose the CFL start a streaming service for 2026
the current broadcast media rights extend to the end of the 2026 season, so same rights holder until then. After that it most likely will be TSN but you never know
CBC does not have a sports arm, they have been getting out of sports broadcasting for years. Expect severe cuts to the CBC in the future.
CTV? they have the rights now - their sports arm is TSN/RDS
RDS has the CFL french rights and RDS has the rights to Canadiens hockey. Makes sense that they keep the CFL.
Why would the broadcast rights go anywhere else?
Sportsnet has the Jays on every night in the summer, zero interest in paying for rights they don’t need, from a league they dont have a vested interest in.
when CBC televised games, it was a gong show. They had home-game blackouts, perpetrated by the stupidity of the teams. Hard to imagine: home teams win more than lose, so, instead of showcasing their brand, the home team denies their fans viewership, choosing instead to allow them to watch away games which more often resulted in losses. The CFL always lacked marketing acumen, and still struggles with same today, not withstanding their partnership with marketing firms.
People need to lose the dream of the CBC ever bidding on CFL rights again. There will likely never be another game on CBC.
I get the whole good ol’ days nostalgia thing and maybe one day the CBC can simulcast a Grey Cup or something for old times sake, but it’s the equivalent of wondering if we can bring back VCRs. It’s not where things are going. Times change.
I can’t believe how often I read it on social media.
I complain about TSN but we have a good thing with them. We know where and when the games are. You DO NOT want games on multiple networks.
I’ve had to remind my dad a couple times to find recent games on CTV. Out of sight, out of mind.
They have this season … but ratings have been disappointing … CFL would have to accept significant reductions in rights fees to go back to “over-air” broadcasters … won’t happen.
Today, 93.5% of Canadian households have access to high-speed Internet compared to just 79% in 2014. Current projections show that 98.6% of households will have access by 2026. Since the launch of the UBF in November 2020, 295 projects have been announced across Canada.
Virtually every Canadian will have access to high speed internet by the end of 2026. Games do not have to be free, the CFL is running a business and the current and future targrt markets for the league are not using OTA antennas, they are streaming or watching by other means.
I don’t want to pay for Netflix, therefore I don’t expect to watch it.
People who mention CBC are maybe nostalgic but in terms of today’s Canadian media landscape, it is a clueless wish.
CBC is available to almost everyone but has less than 5% viewing share. When you can watch what you want whenever you want, being just available isn’t good enough.
Average demo watching CBC is over 65. Not the group CFL advertisers would be interested or CFL needs to grow the next gen fans.
CBC’s public budget hasn’t increased in 30 years. Other than Olympics, CBC doesn’t pay for any for the other sports it shows. Due to these budget issues, back in 2014, CBC said it will not bid for any men’s pro sports shown on other channels.
Without a lot of extra funding there won’t be any professional sports on CBC (except as with Sportsnet giving it to them for PR purposes) in the foreseeable future, regardless of who is the head of the CBC.
