First Grey Cup that I watched was 1979. Eskimos in the big O against the Als. Waddell Smith catching a long TD in the late first quarter, the defender falling and Smith waving goodbye as he ran to the endzone. That is my first Grey Cup memory, emblazoned on my brain. Otherwise it was a bit of a snoozer 17-9 Esks, ring #2 of the 5 straight.
First Grey Cup attended was 1986. I was 14 and family friends had an extra ticket. Eskimos were heavy favorites but on their first 2 possessions, a blocked punt and a sack and fumble led to 2 very early TiCat TDs. The game was essentially over. I was sitting maybe 10 rows up in the endzone with great view of that. One of those TDs Steve Stapler caught in the corner of the endzone and as he caught it he ran under he BC Place stands almost directly under me, so I missed the actual catch but the crowd went nuts and I knew he scored. Cats destroyed Edmonton 39-15.
First GC ,1971 listened on radio, while playing vibration football game(not sure of the name, it had magnet footballs, spring loaded kickers and qb,s), older posters may remember the game)
First TV GC 1976
First GC attended was 94 (OH CANADA)won tickets and trip to Vancouver(same Hotel as many CFL execs including the Late Mr Anderson owner of the Sacramento Gold Miners" it's a great day for football" _ the game was the first with an All American team competing
My first CFL game/memory was way back in '91 @ skydome, I got to see Raghib Ismail shred the Ticats and I remember my father pointing out John Candy and Wayne Gretzky who were standing down on the field.
My First GC memory was '96 and my dad cursing as we were watching the game and him saying, "Damn, I hate the argos but I should have bought tickets to this game!!"
'98 GC rolls along, Stamps Ticats, I remember when Mark McLoughlin kicked the game winning fieldgoal against the cats, I was in grade 6 or 7, and I balled my eyes out and I didnt want to go to school the next morning. The Cats would get their redemption in '99!!
My First Grey Cup and VERY fittingly was the 1976 GC between the Ottawa Rough Riders and Saskatchewan.
I remember standing beside my dad's old White-Westinghouse B&W TV as Bill Hatanaka ran that punt back for the TD. I can also distinctly remember jumping up and down on my parent's couch as Clements drove the ball down the field on the final drive capping it off with the TD pass to Tony Gabriel.
I was my cousin's Birthday that day and we were going to their house after the game. they lived near the corner of Bank st and Gladstone ave. People were jumping up and down on the hood and roof our our 66 Ford Galaxy 500 and high fiving us through the window as we made our way down Gladstone Ave. It was just insane.
I know we will see that one more time in the not to distant future. I'm just so happy that I got to witness it.
The first Grey Cup I watched was the 1969 Ottawa vs Sask game. That was also the year I attended my first game, Ottawa at Hamilton in the old Civic Stadium. The first Grey Cup I attended was that 1992 disaster in Toronto. What a soulless event that was. I've only missed watching one and a half games since. The one missed was the 82 game because I was up in northern Greenland and the half game was the 99 Ticat win when I was suffering from a very ill time migraine headache. The game was on but I couldn't of cared less considering the pain I was in.
I was at that game, funny you should mention it. I was gonna talk about how me and my Dad and his buddy drove to Calgary from Vancouver in late November and it was pretty nuts, it was getting dark when we were heading through the rocky’s and it was snowing hard. We barely made it. My dads buddies car had somehow rotted through the axle and we actually almost died on that trip. But it was worth it for Lui’s last game, even tho i was at his last game in BC.
The first Grey Cup i know would’ve been with my dad in the 80’s as he was a Lions season ticket holder when i was 2 or 3 but the first one i remember was around 9 years old just after the Canucks final, i remember the Grey Cup in 94 against Baltimore that was an awesome game when we beat Baltimore and their all-american lineup.
