Cold affects everyone but not equally if you’re conditioned to it.
True, “conditioning” helps…..not just physically, but mentally too. If you are really cold, and behind in the game, it affects your play: how hard you hit, or try to take that extra step. You become distracted, thinking about “when is this punishment going to end.” Even if it distracts only on a single play, or two, it could make a difference. And, it is true that our blood changes as it gets colder. So, guys playing indoors, and living in a warmer climate haven’t yet adapted to the cold. Of course, you can’t condition skin to “not freeze.”
The mental aspect is huge.
I have a few friends that at plus 5 cannot function outdoors and their lips turn blue. I on the other hand am still shorts and T-shirts at that temp.
Maybe they should move to Hawaii……or stay indoors for 6 months out of the year.
Hope that Rourke is more like them and less like you
Good on you!
I was in the lake for 15 minutes last weekend and will be again Sunday after the game. Water is around 5 degrees right now. The effect of cold on the body and mind is very stimulating and peaceful!
Really don’t care for the cold anymore. Used to love it. It’s fine if i’m moving around which is tough to do at the stadium. Suppose there is always the electric socks and underwear option. The upside to getting old is that i’m getting old lol.
Problem with that is you acclimatize. 20 degrees in some places is now fireplace weather.
Did you see in the WSF all the BC players wearing touques? Side note, WRs don’t like cold hands and hard footballs.
5 degrees in water can kill in 3 to 5 hours.
Now after that PSA back to football in the West final.
I’ll be sure not to go that long!
Good, I was worried ![]()
SHF. Exactly! That’s where the mind enters the picture. Back in the day, I played in the cold. When the ball feels like a frozen brick, and you drop one cuz your hands can’t “feel” the ball, your mind tells you that it will be impossible to make catches. You don’t give up, but negativity compounds the issue…..so more drops follow. And, eventually, especially if you are behind, you just want this drudgery to end. It doesn’t help when a defender lights you up, and frozen body parts are feeling pain added to the cold.
ABC…..there is a caution. I am concerned about that feeling of tranquility. As hypothermia takes hold, the brain become irrational. In fact, just before death, the brain is fooled into thinking that you are overheating, and this is the reason hypothermia victims may shed clothes before succumbing.
It’s true that i like to make fun of those mushroom sucking lily pad dancers, Buck knows where the bear craps in the bush. He’ll have those guys in the right frame of mind. Was after all stuck in the Peg where it took years to shovel his way out! Still, edge Riders.
Thanks Sack ![]()
All good though I’ve been doing it for a while now very intentionally. It’s not that I don’t feel cold it’s the embracing the cold this is powerful. It takes much longer to experience genuine hypothermia. My body has become conditioned and it’s a very beneficial experience for multiple reasons.
Good approach in a limited fashion. Try working in a blast freezer at neg 30 year around for twenty years. What i’ve heard is that you develop an Intolerance for the cold eventually after you’ve become accustomed to it. Yes, people actually do that kind of work and winter is not welcome when it arrives.
Could be true but do you think the Inuit develop an intolerance?
Let the games begin! Super lineup! Tate is starting at LG, Reavis at safety and Brooks Jr at Sam. Fantastic!
Surprised to see Saad starting at DT with Rose backing up. The price of four import Oline and an import safety? Not sure it was necessary since we are starting 7 NI’s plus the Global for 8. A DN would make 9. Tons of in game flexibility there. Kind of wished we could have also carried Sapp as DB depth but Lokombo can handle that right?
The teams will decide this game, not injuries!
