Anyone know what this is all about? Doesn’t appear to be a structure that holds a stadium light grid
they used to hold the old speaker system that was suspended above the field.
it was installed for the 88 winter olympics, then decommissioned and taken down in 2022, but those giant towers are still there.
here’s a pic from before the towers and speaker were installed. I grew up near there and we watched games through holes in the fence. I saw Warren Moon play there. @RedandWhite will probably remember some of this too.
Thanks, GridironGirl! Did not notice there are four of them. Only saw one
This is what I thought it might be … listed from most likely to least likely in my opinion:
- water tower for local residential homes in and around the stadium
- decommissioned oil drill
- decommissioned observation deck for the coaches/media before a luxury box was built in the stadium
- Lightning rod towers
- ICBM missle gantry support
- Zeppelin tie-offs (for visiting teams airships)
My dad’s company bid on the job to design those supports. In the end they decided on the dumbest way to proceed.
Way over priced, requiring additional footings to install, (adding even more to the cost) and with a limited life span.
So now they stand a monument to “they look like oil derrick’s and we like that aesthetic” dumbassery…
Use the old oil derricks as supports for a Spidercam?

I bet there’s an issue the Spidercam creators insist on using their own support towers for liability reason. This means there will have to be four additional towers built next to the four existing towers.
Does your dad remember how his proposal looked? It’d be interesting to see what other options were out there.
Not in the defense of how what’s there got there but it was the olympics, lotsa dumass decisions seem to happen when ppl in power are smoking that specific opium…
Well, that was interesting.
I think we got our answer on this question pertinent to McMahon Stadium plus some good stories.
they could string a tarp over the field from those towers to make a poor mans retractable roof.
Unfortunatly, he isn’t around anymore. I know his bid came in at well less than the derrick bid and by comparison looked beautiful.
He did a lot of enduring exterior design work. No1 Station in Sherwood Park was one of his best IMO.
Can’t…the reason the centre speaker is gone is because they are no longer structurally sound.
haha i knew someone would think i was serious but i was hoping it would be EZ lol
Well…so you aren’t disapponted, make it a big balloon roof…fill it with helium…
Dickinson might be hanging from one of those towers at season end lol
Those towers have been there for years. You’re just noticing now?
LOL!!! Get the tarps from Home Depot
