Now let's look at rushing yards: Again remarkably similar but pipkin is the short yardage QB which negatively impacts his yards per carry and embellishes his TD totals.
Everywhere but their record these two kids have almost identical stats all around. Where it differs is Pipkin's ability to close out the deal with a .500 record to Manziel's .000 winning percentage.
If you took the names out, I think most people would pick Pipkin, the edge is slight but it is still there. You can also make a case that Manziel played his last 3 games against the 3 best teams in the league presently...
It further demonstrates what Johnny has been saying. Both Manziel and Pipkin have shown some promise and should be kept by the Alouettes. Let them fight it out in training camp next year.
All the same, as a fan of the ‘Canadian’ game, i have to say that i’m particularly impressed by the # of Pipkin’s long-yardage runs from scrimmage. That’s what coaxes a “Rah!!” from me.
But to contradict myself, you still have to be taken with Manziel’s ‘no guts no glory’ credo. Case in point: On one memorable 30-or-so yard scramble, Pipkin wisely tucked it in and slid untouched somewhere around the edge of FG range, whereas we can be prit-tee sure that in making that same split second decision, Manziel would have smelled blood and pinned his ears back ( …right before the lights went out…?). Like in the final scene of Leon The Professional. Don’t know if i can always repress the ‘roman’ in me.
The hilarious thing about it is the fact that Drew has as many TD passes this season as both of these two combined . I'll even go you one better and point out that the wee Willy guy is leading all Mtl QB's in TD passes with a grand total of 3 on the entire season . :o Maybe you guys might just be concentrating on the wrong two QB's :o I do gotta admit though that this has gotta be one of the sorriest and saddest looking lists of QB's ever assembled by one team in a single season. :-[
TD passes and ints for Alouette QB's 2018 season .
Drew Willy..........4 gms.........3 tds / 1 int
John Manziel.......5 gms.........2 tds / 6 int
Antonio Pipken....4 gms.........1 td / 8 int
Jeff Mathews.......3 gms.........1td / 1 int
Matt Schiltz.........1 gm..........1 td / 2 int
Vernon Adams.....2 gms.........0 td / 1 int
We can all see by the numbers that the 2 most well rounded quarterbacks are Manziel and Pipkin. With Adams at a distance from them. Manziel and Pipkin should be allowed to battle it out next year. But the elephant in the room is the offensive line. Any QB that plays behind that group will be doing his best impression of running with the bulls. And let’s also face it, they have affected the RB’s as well. If Sutton or Stanback couldn’t shake or run over every defender in sight by themselves they would never gain a yard.
Without an improvement in the offensive line, and an upgrading of our receiving corps, we’ll be looking at 3-15 (at best) yet again next season.
While I recognize that most, if not all, of us longtime Als’ fans hope for a housecleaning from ownership to management to coaching staff, that might not happen.
So if the owners keep the team, and don’t tie the can to Reed, and he keeps Sherman as head coach. . .
Then, as a bare minimum, Paul Dunn, Joe Mack, and Khari Jones have just got to go.
Good. Despite the reality that the Forums don't lend easily, this at least provides data that provides a reality of bringing data to the process of evaluation.
When you compile and try and “digest” it all, I’m left with comments from earlier this week by the RB coach and the Center. That this team’s offense has been amateurish from week one to week seventeen.
I don’t believe that Phil Blake, Kristian Matte and Tony Washington have become useless overnight. This team has a coaching issue, a head coach who knows little about the team, he acted more as a staff manager and a cheerleader while his inept OC and Offensive line coach were unable to build an offense that can be productive in the current CFL. Ball has to be out in two steam boats or less, you need speed, which again this year is nowhere to be found.
Next season is going to be a weird one. Most of the league is up for free agency this winter and the Als have already spent their next three years top picks on two offensive line prospects who we haven’t seen all season… Why are these kids not playing and getting some experience? Why is the team hiding them? Are they that bad? Are they damaged allreday?
You come back with these people and their inept US scouts and your looking at another 1 to 4 win season. another couple thousand less paying fans every game and still their replacements will start behind the 8 ball.
First, I think it is a fruitless excercise for fans to do any picking at all. I have no doubt that there will be some competition at QB next season but all things being equal, unless someone is head and shoulders above JF then you have to go with Manziel. Why? Because this is a business and JF has the potential to draw many more fans than Pipkin or any other QB on the roster. Report is that TSN viewership for Montreal is up 20% since Manziel joined the team. If Johnny can reach his full potential he could increase the number of fans on tv and in the stadium far beyond what any single player on the team could do.
There is nothing in the statistical comparisons that make one QB standout at this point. However I would make this argument. Johnny’s stats are held down because of the first game where he was totally unprepared and should not even have played. He threw 4 interceptions in that game. He has only thrown 2 in the next 4 games despite going against the toughest teams in the league. He has gotten better every game if you give any credibility to the sportscasters. Pipkin by comparison threw 4 interceptions in his 4th game. He did not improve each game. There is no doubt that Sherman has kept Manziel in front for exactly those reasons. Unless something changes Manziel will stay in front. But as someone who coached for 35 years, I know this for sure. Sherman doesn’t give a flying rip about what the fans think he should be doing… and the day he does he should turn in his resignation.
I am as big of a Manziel fan as you are Seafiddle. The thing that bothers me, if I’m trying to be fair, is that he isn’t playing with the same recklessness as he did in AggieLand. Almost as if he’s holding back trying to not make mistakes or maybe not get hurt. Maybe the offensive coordinator has his hands tied. But because of that no one has been able to see the amazing ability that he has as a runner which opens things up for him to throw. Also because of that he is leaving the door open for this comparison to Pipkin. He isn’t the type of pocket passer to the point where he should be changing his style. The CFL is perfect for his old style of play. But if he is going to attempt to be a throw first from the pocket QB then he is not taking advantage of his full skill set and will take major punishment behind the front he has. He is a Michael Vick type of player and just needs to continue to be that.
One thing I factor in to wanting to see how Manziel progresses is that he hadn’t played for a couple of years before this season, so (hopefully, if they keep him) there is still upside left to emerge as he gets “back on his feet” and “learns the CFL game”.
If you are going to go with a dual threat QB, you need a coordinator that knows something about it. Khari Jones was one of the biggest pylons every to throw in this league. Put Jeff Garcia in charge of this team. Give him the HC, GM the whole thing and let him figure things out.
I agree with you. What I don’t know is why. JF fans will be disappointed if he can’t regain at least some of the moves that gave him the name Johnny Football. I’m trying to figure it out. Obviously one factor is that he is playing on a very weak team…Last in almost every category. Even so he out played one of the best QB’s in the league the first half last game. Then the Stamps made adjustments and basically shut him down the 2nd half. I couldn’t help thinking that if somehow the QB’s were switched and JF was behind the Stamps OF the game wouldn’t have been close.
It’s hard to tell what will happen next year but he will be starting miles ahead of where he was this season. You would think that would that would make a big difference. In my opinion it wouldn’t be that hard to match the output of the top QB’s in the league. Mitchell and Reilly have looked good at times but they have also looked pretty bad. You could say the same for every other starter in the CFL. So far Johnny has not gone backwards in a game… not that it couldn’t happen.
I’m looking forward to the next two games with the Argos. The Als should be able to win one or both of those games. Then when Johnny plays the final game against the TiCats we will see how much he has improved (or not) since the first game.
