We Asked: What should the Elks do with the No. 1 pick?

When you have the first overall pick in any draft, you have to weigh all of your options.

Edmonton Elks general manager and head coach Chris Jones is in the middle of that with his staff right now.

What they always do…take the best player available. Jones has a weakness when it comes to linebackers, but they may be more stratigic this season and draft on the O or D Line…

That draft looks deep on talent on both lines and there is no aversion to Canadian talent here like some would claim.

No real clues where they are looking but with 6 picks in the first 31 no doubt they will address depth this year.

Change their name before they make it.

With the signing of Steward & Richards they’re in pretty good shape on OL but I do think they will pick up 1 in round 2. There should be plenty around. The consensus pick seems to be Dublanko & that would be a terrific pick. He has said he’s played WIL - team him up with Nyles & you’d have 2 really good LB’s. But there are a couple of other very good LB’s available if they get a real good offer for #1.

Jones was expected to take Tyrell Richards 2 years ago but traded the pick & ended up with Makonzo, who had a really good rookie year before injuries last year, & Ford in round 1. IMO they have a bunch of players they like pretty evenly & would trade the pick for the right offer.

I like that reasoning. With the signings they made there are no apparent holes along the lines.

And Jones likes linebackers because they are the “universal” player to him and can play almost every other position on the defence except on the line.

Are you really still whinging on about the name? Good grief.

IMO, the Double E is in a “win now” scenario.
I think with the loss in sacks with the departures of AC and Jake, Dublanko is the best bet unless another team wants that #1 pick badly enough. Would be great to have CFL experienced players instead of rookies.
Regardless of who is picked…GO ELKS!
