Virtual Grey Cup Challenge, Week 1

Well, the 2011 season is about to start, and that means it's time to start up the VGCC.

For anyone who's interested, last season's standings are posted here.

Here are the games for Week 1:
B.C. @ Montreal
Winnipeg @ Hamilton
Toronto @ Calgary
Edmonton @ Saskatchewan

To join in, just start making picks. You can join in at any time, though the later in the season you join, the harder it will be to catch up.

To make your picks, reply to this post with your predicted winners. This is a straight-up win/loss pool; point spreads are not taken into account.

To be considered for any game, your pick for that game must be made PRIOR to the scheduled kickoff time. Even if your pick is made one minute late, or the kickoff is delayed, if it's after the scheduled kickoff time, it's late. No exceptions.

To change your picks, post another reply to the thread. Do NOT edit your original post. I may miss the change, or you may invalidate your picks.

While you're free to elaborate on your picks, your predicted winner must be clear at a glance. I don't want to have to read through a five-hundred word essay to figure out which team you're picking. More accurately, I won't.

Conditional picks are not allowed. That is, there is no "Calgary if Burris plays, Edmonton if he doesn't." If you make a conditional pick, I will accept the first team named as your pick.

The complete rules are posted here.

Okay, I might as well make my picks now.

B.C. @ Montreal: Montreal has been the team to beat for years now, and I don't think that's changed in the off-season. While the Lions have done well against them, picking Montreal to lose at home is never a good idea. Als by 8.

Winnipeg @ Hamilton: Winnipeg may be improving, but based on where they're starting from, it's not likely they'll win their first game, especially on the road against a decent team. Cats by 9.

Toronto @ Calgary: Calgary is too good for the Argos. Stamps by 15.

Edmonton @ Saskatchewan: When the Grey Cup finalists host a team that missed the playoffs, it's hard to pick an upset. Riders by 12.

We'll see what happens.

Here are my picks for game 1 of the regular 2011 season.

Montreal over BC.
Hamilton over Winnipeg.
Calgary over Toronto.
Saskatchewan over Edmonton.

Thank you Big Dave and like all of us,have a great CFL season, eventhough your team will not be in the 2011 Grey Cup.

Oh man, this is the best time of the year!!!!!! The week 1 match-ups look easy to call (and we are seeing a lot of the same picks made so far!), but its the start of a new season, and you just never know!

I am definitely in! Here are the first picks of my sophomore season:

B.C. @ Montreal - Montreal just doesnt lose at home.
Winnipeg @ Hamilton - This is the most likely road-win upset of the week.
Toronto @ Calgary - Calgary's D is a question mark right now, but they still can out-gun just about anyone.
Edmonton @ Saskatchewan - I dont think Edmonton got much better, and I dont think the Riders' lost that much.

Montréal
Hamilton
Toronto (Stamps are a great team, but the Argos will surprise, I hope)
Saskatchewan

OK, I'll give it a try this year.

Montreal over BC, Lions are still something of an unknown quantity whereas Montreal is anything but.

Winnipeg over Hamilton, not just loyalty but the Ticats have bombed in their last two season openers; even gave Andrus one of his wins.

Calgary over Toronto, the Argos weren't as good as their record last year and haven't improved much that I can see, whereas Calgary should realistically challenge for the Cup.

Saskatchewan over Edmonton, see Montreal over BC.

I was tempted to troll you just to bait you into breaking the bet, but you’ve been pretty good, so I won’t.

This first week feels pretty easy.

A new season is upon us finally. Last year I was vying for a playoff spot for most of the season and fell out of contention in the last couple of weeks finishing 42-28 in 19th spot. This year I'm playing the Rona pool in parallel with this one, so it will be interesting to see the results side by side.

As usual for me, I will make my picks with out justification for weeks 1 & 2 since the first two weeks of the season are a crapshoot. They are essentially pre-season games that have meaning and often run contrary to how the rest of the season plays out. So with out further ado...

Hamilton
Calgary - A change from the Rona Pool where I picked Toronto
