"The Vaahteraliiga is the highest level of American football in Finland played under American Football Association of Finland. The winner of the Vaahteraliiga is the Finnish champion.... The name Vaahteraliiga ("Maple League") comes from the name of the championship trophy Vaahteramalja ("Maple Bowl"), which was donated to the newly formed association by the embassy of Canada in Finland."
This has to be one of strangest things I've read lately. I wonder if the Finns would be surprised to find out that the country that gave them their trophy for the most part doesn't even play by the same rules as the sport that the trophy is awarded for. They do have a pretty cool logo, though, a Maple Leaf made up of footballs.
