I know the NFL has been doing this but other than when it is on a QB I really can’t think of a call like this in the CFL until now. Even as recently as last year this was a legal hit:

Is this game’s penalty call going to be the new precedent going forward?
Of course in this case the receiver was ducking his head and instigated the contact (which wasn't even helmet to helmet) but I assume that's what the refs thought it was.
Who cares even if it was helmet to helmet? The reciever had the ability to defend themselves. The only way this should be called is if the ball carrier is in the grasp of another defender, or if the hit is on a defenseless reciever ie a reciever jumping through the air and getting hit in the helmet. I dont even know where the basis is in the CFL rule book for a penalty/fine in these cases.
I completely agree with you that it shouldn’t matter and shouldn’t be a penalty at all. I was just wondering if this was the future of how the game is going to be called, regardless of any misgivings you or I might have.
I can’t believe you have a problem with this penalty…it’s a textbook spearing infraction, helmet to helmet and intended to injure…it’s disgusting really. And I’m a Bomber fan…
Sears hit being called a penalty? Yeah I do have a problem with it being called as such.
If you are referencing the hit in the video I posted then I agree that that should probably be a penalty. I merely included it in this topic to show what was considered legal in the CFL even as short a time ago as last season.
Sorry, thought that was the hit you were discussing. I seem to remember a hit in the game yesterday (maybe it’s the play you are referring to) that seemed to be a legit penalty from one angle but perhaps not from another. Saw a similar play in an nfl game last weekend too where the commentators were suggesting it should have been a helmet to helmet but as they were saying that they started to roll another angle of the play (the official’s angle) that clearly showed it wasn’t…and a good “non-call”.
These types of plays can look very different depending on your position…tough to call sometimes I think…
