TSN Play Calling

I’m not sure cfl as Collingsworth, even though I realize he’s an ex player, isn’t exactly what I would call masculine in his delivery and he seems to work for NFL broadcasts.

You’re an idiot. Seriously.

If you think a higher-pitched voice is distracting, and akin to a cartoon character’s exaggerated lisp, your brain cells are in short supply and not of the greatest quality.

I'd prefer Sophia Vergara as a commentator..

Try and tell me ratings wouldn't rise dramatically with her at the helm..
(no double entendre intended.....or was it?)

Bite me, you can’t have a voice that is distracting to the actual game.

Rod Black is not good for the game because he causes people to talk more about him and his errors and stupidity rather than the actual game itself. That is NOT good!

Why not? If a female does a good job with the highlights, why couldn’t she do a good job with play-by-play?

I think Holly does a great job on the highlights. No annoying fake voice, clear diction, smooth delivery. Nothing fancy, just solid. I’d totally give her a shot at it. Rod Smith was great without a teleprompter, maybe she’d be good too, maybe not, but it would have nothingto do with her vocal register.

I know this is kinda out of left field but when he retired I was kinda hoping Barron Miles would have gone into broadcasting because someone that plays the safety position for so long and so well would probably be able to give great analysis on most plays. He's employed with the Lions right now so there probably isnt a point in asking at least until his contract with them runs out

there are a lot of people out there that wouldn’t be able to take a female seriously doing play by play for a game that men play.

because i’m pretty sure they’re thinking “what does she know about football? she hasn’t played it, she’s got no experience with it!”

it’s not going to happen. Men out there just would not take it seriously is a woman was doing the play by play.

I know there are women out there who know football a lot better than some guys on here think they know. I know there are women out there who could train to do just as good if not better than some of the guys in the booth. IN fact, it is very possible that a women could become the best.

However, I have been listening to men in the both for 40 yrs. I think I would be adverse to a woman in the booth, simply because it would be different.

I do not like most of the women on the sidelines, jobwise, but I did like lesley visser.

I like Dunnigan and Miller.
Like how Dunnigan is always contradicting Miller.
And how Miller gives it right back.
Dunnigan knows the game and is also entertaining.
Even better.
Dunnigan knows not to talk over the play.
He makes his comment, and stops just before the ball is snapped.
That is how you do it.
Somebody tell Duane Forde that.

That’s absolutely ridiculous. Everybody loves Chris Cuthbert for some godforsaken reason. Has he ever played football? And even if he ever has, nobody ever bloody well cares so the point is moot.

A woman can’t do play by play because she never played. Preposterous. There’s a color commentator in the very next seat.

“The only time a woman should be involved in a football game is when she brings over the beer or makes the sandwiches”.
Mark Twain

It is not. You ask hardcore football fans if they’d be ok with a female pbp host and you can bet they’d say no

And cuthbert has yearssss of football and hockey pbp calling so he is accepted

I would be ok with xena doing it.

Id be fine with one so long as she gives good commentary on the play

what would be most annoying would all the juvenile posters who would be more concerned with the womans appearance and clothing, etc.

Interesting. I'd give it a try BUT I have to admit that when you hear a women's Team Canada Hockney game (with female commentators) vs a guys game ... it does feel different.

If the lady is gifted as a commentator, she'll do okay, just take getting use too. Probably help to attract some more female football fans.

Since you listen to them mostly this isn’t an issue but typically announcers are not the most ugly people out there, typically. Sure John Madden was an exception  , but not the rule  .

I've seen several female sportscasters who were excellent behind the desk, and who certainly appeared as knowledgeable as their male counterparts. (I say appeared because I simply do not know if they wrote their own material or not)

I certainly never had an issue with their voice, as long as they were competent at their job. I'm sure that the first female sportscasters met with similar objections to what we have seen on this thread, and yet they persevered, and blazed a trail for the ladies who currently hold these jobs. Granted, not all of them are good, but then, neither are all male sportscasters.

I see no reason why the same progression can't happen in the game booth. The first female play-callers will certainly take some stick, but they will blaze a trail for the next generation, and so on, until no one actually cares if the person calling the play is a male or female.

And the thought of a female losing credibility in the booth because she never played is ludicrous. You don't have to have played the game to have studied it. I truly believe that Holly Horton could do as good a job, if not better, in the booth than Rod Black (who, incidentally, has also likely never played a down of football in his life.)

It’d be nice if that’s how it worked, but some people were upset when Cassie Campbell started working on HNIC and she was an olympic champion in the sport. stupid yes but that’s how it is.
