Troy Smith ready to return

Listening to the Tom Higgins segment on TSN690, it seems clear to me that Higgins is not interested in Troy Smith returning. I think what Popp does with Smith will tell us a lot about where his head is at. If they plan on sticking with Higgins they might as well trade Smith to Saskatchewan where he would be a great fit to finish the season and then backup Durant next year. Worst case cutting him and using the money to extend other players would also make sense. If Smith is kept. I'm thinking Popp will give him another chance next year under new "management".

To me when Popp plugged in Schonert and Garcia, he essentially made Higgins a figurehead, around for the rest of the season but that`s it.

For better or worse Popp gave Garcia the mandate to clear up the QB situation. It was telling when Troy Smith was almost immediately put on the 6 game for "not having a sense of urgency." I guess that`s not a medical condition so it was his knee , hand, etc. Garcia was not a fan.

I would not be surprised if Smith is released next week.

I would not release him. Saskatchewan will jump on him. Als need to trade him if they don't want him.

You could be right, idealsheldon, but I will be extremely surprised if Troy Smith is released next week or this season. To me, he will be in training camp in 2015. After having him on the negotiating list for 7 years or so and extending until the end of 2016, in december 2013, and possibly giving him a signing bonus, I doubt that Jim Popp will release him, just like that. I will be less surprised if Alex Brink is released. Will all depend on Crompton's performance this Sunday.

So you don't expect Higgins back next year?

Something went wrong this year with Troy Smith and I am pretty certain Popp knows what that is.

I can't speak for Richard, but I sure would be shocked if Higgins was back next year.

What went wrong with Smith is that he's no good.

Over and above the mechanical stuff, I don`t think Smith was putting in the time. I believe he was one of the players called out by Bowman early in the season for that. AC set the bar on that aspect.

That’s also what the TSN crew was suggesting when questioning Higgins.

Higgins won't be back next year.

Richard

Or the Lions, Bombers.

Smith was not as bad when he played last season vs the games he played in this season.
Is it all him or a combination of him - Higgins-Dinwiddie ?!

He should have been gone by now never mind next season.

Except for Brink, I think the QBs this year will likely get a mulligan next season, once (hopefully) Higgins is gone and we can bring some proper offensive structure to the team.

Well, injuries and poor attitude/work ethic are not mutually exclusive. It's quite possible that everything that's been reported about Troy Smith is true -- that he did have recurring multiple injuries AND that he wasn't putting in the work in the film room or wherever. We all like to search for big causes and primary explanations but more often than not, player performance, good or bad, depends on a multitude of interlocking factors.

And what is he going to say ? " I got frustrated with the gong show. I would start learning a playbook, went through 4 of them in six months and got frustrated and it got away from me? :s

Some would say “that isn’t professional” but some would say “I can see it”.

He liked what Worman had put together and then that guy was fired by a HC who doesn’t want Smith around. Hmmm…

There is no way to figure this mess out, they are all stained.

Oh, I know! I'm not saying he doesn't have reason to be disgruntled. Having said that, if Worman was really a bigot and was making bigoted comments to members of our staff, he obviously had to go, regardless of how Higgins felt about Smith.

Agreed 100% that everyone is stained by this mess.
