Training camp 2025: Running Backs

I’m not being snarky, I’m genuinely curious: do other teams typically dress two American running backs?

Quel serait alors le ratio des 21 joueurs N….pour les Alouettes.

I don’t know what is in “Fashion” right now but there is nothing preventing teams from dressing two American Running Backs. I suppose if you start a pair of Canadian receivers, or dress five Canadian linesmen you have more options. Then again a team that dresses two would most likely use some two back sets in some situations.

My impression is that most teams aren’t going to dress an extra American running back barring special circumstances (the major one being injury). That extra RB has to contribute on teams or else it’s a wasted spot, and even then, how many two-back American sets do we see across the league? If you trust your CanCon, you can run those formations without the extra American.

Doesn’t really matter. You are going to dress 22 Americans and 21 Canadians and this is where changing the status of Canadian quarterbacks would add a lot of flexibility to CFL roster strategy.

No question, right now it is very much a cookie cutter league.

Off the top of my head, Toronto, Edmonton and Calgary did last year. I haven’t researched for more.

My supplemental question would be: did they also dress a Canadian running back?

D. MacMahon A 48 courses 16 pour-cent 288 verges
D. Adeboboye N 63 courses 21 pour-cent 244 verges

Dude, there is no winning formula for ratio.

The key is striving to ensure that every Canadian you start is as good or better than the American you have at that position. No fielding a scrub just to say you’re starting a Canadian.

If you look at our projection:

  • OL. Lestage and Lawrence are both all-stars. Gibbon, Saindon, Nouilli, and Shanks are excellent depth.
  • FB Dallaire / WR Spieker (nationalized American). Spieker is an integral part of our offence. I don’t think anyone’s dressed an American at fullback since the days of Mike Sellers. But Dallaire is good. He’s a decent pass-catcher as a safety valve in addition to being a good blocker. Mason (FB) and one of the Canadian backups are fine as depth.
  • WR Philpot. One of the top receivers in the entire league. Fervius is decent at backup.
  • DE Berglund and Uguak. Berglund is coming off a terrific season. Uguak should bounce back to his 2023 form. Archibald is an excellent backup and rotation guy.
  • FS. Dequoy. Enough said. One of the best safeties in the league. Beauchemin and Hamlin are great depth.

That’s 7/8 spots. Now, we have uncertainty about how we’re going to fill out that eighth spot, but teams around the league are in a similar position with ratio. No one is going to have elite depth behind their Canadian starters. So Fervius and Oladejo and Harris are big drop-offs from Philpot but that’s inevitable.
