Training Camp 2025: Receivers

There are 19 receivers and returners invited to the 2025 training camp. An astonishingly large group considering the quality of the returning personnel. This likely has to do with a new Starting quarterback
to find receivers that provide the best fit. There is also a trend in that most receivers brought in to compete are over six feet and 200 pounds, it appears size was a criteria

Two rookies to keep an eye out for are Jordan Veasy who goes way back to 2018 with Marcel Desjardins who put him on his neg list. He’s older than most invites but is bounced around the NFL for five years and a big body. Another is Jalen Wayne, very productive receiver in College, bounced around NFL practice rosters for the last couple years and also a big body.

Nobody is displacing Rambo after the 2024 he had. If anything, Snead is the one who needs to regain his form.

One part of me realizes there is a salary cap to abide by. Another part hates losing players.

The team didn’t re-sign Julien-Grant, even though they likely knew Philpot would not be ready to start the season.

So now I will be watching Alejedo and Fervius, hoping one or both can be pleasant surprises.

Probably better to post this in the general training camp thread.

I think Wayne has a legit shot at sticking. Not so sure the 29-year-old Veasy will even survive the initial round of cuts. He’s spent a long time chasing the NFL and receiver isn’t a position with a high career ceiling age (unlike say, DL or OL).

I remember Fervius’s one catch last year, I believe it was. I was watching it at the stadium and he caught it in traffic and then just pulled away from people and gained like 20 yards after the catch. I was surprised at his speed. Maybe he’ll surprise us given a chance. I’m also of the view that I wish we had kept KJG, but the Als seemed to know right after the season that he wasn’t coming back, so not sure what that was about. Isn’t like he got bags of money in Edm and he didn’t go play at home either. I feel like there is a story there.

I think KJG probably wanted a bit more money than Maciocia was willing to give, given his injury history. And he figured that he’d have a better chance of moving up Edmonton’s receiver room than with us, where there are guys like Mack and Philpot already making more coin.

I wish him the best. Maybe he’ll break out in Edmonton and finally put together a full season of work. But he’ll be 29 in July and he has a lot of injury miles on his body.

It could be he wasn’t a good fit in the receiver room. But I don’t think we’ll ever really know.

He was a Kavis pick too… He had what five seasons to establish himself? Edmonton is in a situation where they have to take chances and if Hervey doesn’t like how he’s looking in camp, he’ll cut him in a minute. Contracts to FA that Maciocia has not honored are few. I’m not even sure I can think of one.

Hope KJG got some up front and/or guaranteed money

Only one that springs to mind recently is Tevin Jones, and even then, it was because he was fairly beat out by Rambo for a roster spot.

He’s got a better shot in Edmonton. They’ve got a bunch of nobodies at receiver and AFAIK no clear Canadian starter. In Montreal, he was never going to displace Mack or Philpot or even Rambo and there is only so much cap we allocate to receiver.

They have Gittens Jr., a bit up and down, but a projected starter.

Yeah, I remembered Gittens after I posted, lol. But even then, he’s in a similar situation to KJG in that he’s been in the league a few years but hasn’t really cemented himself as a bonafide top-tier Canadian starter. And since he’s not a Hervey pick, I don’t think he has any particular inside advantage on a brand-new team with new coaches and presumably a fresh playbook (Maksymic).
