Thanks Yeast! but that argument does not sit well with people of less football knowledge. But I agree with you.

I am not saying that Toronto doesn't have a great defense.
What I am saying is that I don't think that they have the best defense. Don't forget that Montreal beat them 3 times during the year and scored over 100 points in their last 2 games. Yes I know they had no-names on the field for the last game. Toronto won the cup because they won the games that mattered the most.
Like I mentioned before when you look at the 25 defensive categories, Montreal is in first place in 14 of them compared Toronto's 2, I think it is a stretch to say that Toronto had the best defense in the league
How many games was ALLEN , in for those games, against MONTREAL?
The Argos had many CFL defensive players of the week........
And in football all people care about is winning the play off games.
I saw at least 3 ARGOS games were BISHOP faulterd , and the ARGOS defence , won the game for them.
The ARGO'S defence put A.C. out of the play off game. The ARGOS , blocked a kick and had an interception for a T.D. ...........Against the heavily favoured B.C. LIONS , our defence was great once again, and we won.
Printers not playing , is an excuse .........injuries are part of football.
Mattews , made some serious coaching mistakes.....like not having his back up Q.B. play allot and by beating the ARGOS by 60 points in a game that didn't count...........It was motivation for the ARGOS , to win the next game against , Montreal.
I think after Megna went down half way through the season, the Als just weren't quite as good defensively as they were in the first half of the season.
And Megna is back and healthy this year!!!!
Of course there are a few new people in the secondary this year. The question is how good is Sejour and Crutchfield and KariKari at safety etc.
They are bigger and will play tougher in the secondary and I have to expect the Als blitz to be lethal again, which should help them.
Ya, Calgary will have the best d this year for sure!
Hellothere
You are right in everything you have said except that other than than A.C. being knocked out, none of it has anything to do with defense.
Furthermore the objective of the defense is not to injure the QB. unless you are saying they did it on purpose.
Let's look at the facts
Fewest first downs allowed--------MTL 1st Tor 6th
Fewest first downs passing---------MTL 1st Tor 2nd
Fewest off yards allowed-----------MTL 1st Tor 7th
Lowest avg yrds per game----------MTL 1st Tor 7th
Fewest times rushed-----------------MTL 1st Tor 9th (this one is kinda dumb)
Lowest avg yrds per pass-----------MTL 1st Tor 9th
Fewest net yards passing------------MTL 1st Tor 2nd
Lowest avg yrds passing per game---MTL 1st Tor 3rd
Fewest complete passes-------------MTL 1st Tor 3rd
Lowest complete %------------------MTL 1st Tor 6th
Most interceptions-------------------MTL 1st Tor 6th
Fewest fieldgoals--------------------MTL 1st Tor 8th
Lowest avg point per game---------MTL 1st Tor 3rd
Fewest points against----------------MTL 1st Tor 3rd
Fewest first downs rushing----------MTL 2nd Tor 9th------- B.C 1st
Fewest yard net rushing--------------MTL 2nd Tor 9th------- B.C 1st
Lowest avg yrds rushing per game-MTL 2nd Tor 9th--------B.C 1st
Most interception return yards-------MTL 2nd Tor 4th---------Cal 1st
Lowest avg gain per rush-------------MTL 3rd Tor 9th-------- B.C. 1st
Fewest plays allowed from scrimage Mtl 3rd Tor 9th-----------B.C 1st
Most sacks------------------------------Mtl 3rd Tor 5th ------------Sask 1st
Fewest td rushing--------------------- MTL 3rd Tor 7th-------------B.C 1st
Fewest passes attempted--------------MTL 5th Tor 6th(this one is dumb too) Ham 1st
Fewest TD passing---------------------MTL-Tor tied 1st
Fewest TD-------------------------------Tor 1st Mtl 2nd
Those are the facts.
Can you really look at them and say that Toronto had the best defense last year???????
Great stats ro1313.
I hate to keep mentionning Megna because he's not the only reason but I remember at the 10 game mark or so (when Megna got injured) the Als led in 19 of 25 defensive catagories including most sacks and they ended up leading in 14 catagories at the end and 3rd in sacks. still excellent though. A dominant defense.
Yes , Montreal had the best defence during the regular season...........THE ARGOS , had the best defence in the EAST FINAL and the GREY CUP..........................The ARGOS beat the CFL's 2 best offensive teams in the CFL , to WIN the GREY CUP.
As the saying goes..........STATS , go out the window in play off time.
Winning when it counts is the mark of a champion, which the ARGOS are.
And sacks are part of football and have everything to do with defence.
Which NFL or CFL team's defence doesn't want to take a Q.B. out of the game? Defensive players are coached to hit the Q.B. as hard as possible.
If a coach doesn't have a back up Q.B. and his main Q.B. does down, he has put all his eggs into one basket.
Montreal , lost because of bad coaching , over confidence and NO playing time for their back up Q.B.
They got beat by a better team. PERIOD. As did B.C...........Printers or NO Printers.......DICKINSON , ain't no minor leaguer.
In the EAST FINAL when ALLEN ,went down for a few series , the ARGOS back up did quite nicely until ALLEN , returned.ALLEN ,won the GREY CUP, MVP.
Football is a TEAM game.
The facts are that Toronto had a pathetic offense all year, a good defense and excellent special teams. They happened to put it together at the end of the year by adding a few players and getting Allen back in time. But for most of the year, they sucked!
Who did they add at the end of last year :?:
A few NFL cuts
Do we have names?
Hellothere
I agree again with everything you said except
The better team did not win. Call it sour grapes if you want but last year both B.C and Montreal were better teams but they did not win when it counted. Yes you can say that the better team will win when it counts but I dont believe that to always be the case.
The one thing that I never liked about football is the single game playoff system. You can have a perfect 18-0 season and yet a 8-10 team can have a luckey bounce or a bad call in their favor or even win the coin toss and have the wind at their backs in the final quarter and take it all.
At least in hockey and baseball and many other sports, with a best of series more often than not it can be said that the better team won.
Oh well like they always say "wait till next year"
Calgary's secondary still has some questions. Anthony Malbrough his a huge boost to it though, and we'll see what happens with Rashard Anderson. With Coe, Grace, Clark and White, the Stamps have the best linebacking core in the CFL. And their D-line could arguably be the best too.
Over-all, Calgary's front seven may be the best in the CFL. As for best over-all D, I'm not sure. I'll have to see how much that secondary has improved with the new additions.
You are right ro1313. We should make the playoffs a best of 7 series. This way, the Grey Cup game would be played about 6 weeks before training camps' opening.
and Montreal didn’t have any?
Well ,that is football…that is even done in the NFL!
We all what the season to be longer , but know one would survive.
Watch for these guys Jermaine Chatman, Bob Kelly and of course Anderson all have looked great in the DB position.
There seems to be a lot of discussion here in regards to who had the best defense last year. In my mind no doubt that was Montreal.
The question however is who has do you think will have the best defense in 2005. The only thing that keeps me from rating Toronto number one is that they really are one dimensional and have shown they cannot stop the run effectively.
If Montreal can replace the players let lost (which the Don usually does) then I say they have to be considered as the favorite for best all around defense.
My heart wishes it was my Ti-Cats, but, we're not quite there yet.
I would say Montreal their pressure was brutal at times.
