On November 11th it is time to remember more important things than silly football games.
Remembrance Day does not honour nor glorify WAR. Rather, it honours the freedoms and democracy we enjoy and acknowleges the tyranny defeated or being held in check by our military veterans.
Thank a veteran and honour them and those veterans no longer with us by wearing a poppy and consider contributing to the Royal Canadian Legion to honour veterans' sacrifices made for us!!!!
We are indeed fortunate to be living in Canada!!!
Thank-you veterans alive and passed on.
Be generous when you pay for that poppy and attend a ceremony as well. It is only one hour out of the year, but very moving and humbling. Good post TB!
Count me in too. I've been to Flanders, Ypres and the Somme; indescribable feelings amidst all those war cemeteries dotting the farm fields. Found my great-uncle's name on the memorial wall in Arras; found the graves of two of my grandfather's comrades who were killed right beside him - he had told me the story when I was young. Can't describe what it was like. Never forget.
"They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them."
L. Binyon (from 'For the Fallen')
"When you go home tell them of us and say,
For their tomorrow, we gave our today."
J. M. Edmonds
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.
- John McCrae
100% agree! Lets take the day to thank all of our soldiers, both past and present.
We have it pretty good here in Canada (and the US), and we owe it to alot of men braver than I could ever be! Even now in the middle east, maybe we all dont agree with what its all about there, but lets thank the service men and women there too, fighting for the freedom of others, who deserve to relax and watch the sports of their choice too!
Thanks to all of the fallen - rest peacefully! And to all of the current - return safe!
I'd like to echo the statements made in this thread!
Thanks to the men an women who have served and continue to serve this great nation.
The true Canadian heroes.
