Exactly, that was a dumb call. Couldnt believe it.
I listened on Ticats radio and watched on tsn. slight delay but Simoni is great. tells it like it is and calls out the slackers. Better listen while you can because management will probably silence him.
What happens when you’re down 8 and they punt with a strong wind for a single?
Further, what makes you confident the result of the 2 point conversion would be different if it had a different time on the clock. You need to get at least 1 two point convert. So taking it earlier allows you to know what you need moving forward.
If you make this one and you’re down 7 and you don’t need to go for the onside kick. If you don’t then you know you need 2 scores when there’s still some time. If they missed the 2 point conversion with 10 seconds left (assuming Calgary hasn’t gotten the punt rouge) then there’s no time to do anything about it.
In the age of analytics this is the right call. The execution was off. The execution on 3 sides of the ball was wrong all game. That’s what lost the game, not making the correct analytic call to go for 2.
I disagree. We missed, and the game was over. The single would have kept us alive.
What makes you so certain that the result of the 2 pointer would have been different with a different set of numbers on the board? This way we at least knew that we needed the 2 scores and could do something about it. If they’d taken the single and played for getting 8 points later then the Stamps could easily put it out if reach with a single punting with the strong wind and less time on the clock.
The game was not over. There was still 2+ mins left to score 9 points.
When we miss after the hypothetical second TD the game is more likely to be over.
You cant ignore the result of the convert we tried and suggest it might have been different had we of tried it later.
One way to look at it is if you went (and got) the single the momentum is still there, there is a chance still and that reality carries to both sides of the field…losing that two at that time seemed deflating…
Whether or not momentum in sports is actually a thing is a debate as old as sports itself.
So no, in reality it doesn’t carry over to both sides of the ball. We really can’t measure or put anything quantifiable on momentum.
At the end of the day I’d rather be deflated with 3 mins left and a chance than be deflated with 20 seconds left and less of a chance.
But I appreciate there’s a large number of people that believe in momentum, fate, hope, etc.
I wrote the above before seeing the topic addressed in the witch burning thread…interesting points to consider…
If you want to even play the momentum exists game then imagine the momentum if they had gotten the 2 point conversion. The boys would’ve felt it was their game to lose!
