An update from Ticats practice

I’ve been more or less off for a week due to the second and final bye in the Ticats schedule, then took an extra day yesterday to enjoy my 16th wedding anniversary. With the odd hours, weekends and travel, this job can put some strain on family life from time to time so I think it’s important to celebrate the relationship upon which much else is built.

But let’s get caught up…

• Jeff Mathews is now the starting quarterback and he took all the first team reps. How’d he look in practice? He looked fine. He always looks fine in practice. The real question is: how will he look in a game? And that’s impossible to answer.

• the other big piece of Ticats injury news coming out of the Edmonton game was the loss of left tackle Jake Olson. Joel Figueroa was in that spot today with the first team and the team has added former Ticat Marc Dile to the practice roster.

• the following players did not practice or were limited: return man Brandon Banks, guard Ryan Bomben, defensive end Adrian Tracy, Canadian receiver Matt Coates. Defensive backs Rico Murray and Johnny Sears as well as receiver Andy Fantuz and running back C.J. Gable did sideline work but no drills or teams sessions.

• on the plus side, receiver Bakari Grant looks to be back to 100 per cent and was running with the first team offence today.

• offensive tackle Jeremy Lewis and receiver Terrell Sinkfield, both of whom missed practice yesterday for personal reasons, are back today and in their usual spots.

• the Ticats signed six players to the practice roster yesterday: offensive linemen Dile and Cord Howard, running back Michael Ford (who was with the team earlier this season), wide receiver Lestar Jean, defensive end Troy Davis and defensive back Tevrin Brandon.

So with Grant in, who's out?

Thanks for the great update Grover

booooooooooooo

its the 3 stages of being a Cats fan. Excitement than confusion than the sadness hahahaha

Ryan, the second one is saying Joel Figueroa is on for Jake Olsen

thanks, I need a twitter for dummies book.. or should it be twitter for twits lol

Import receiver is the least of my worries. Probably the deepest position on the team.

O-line should be fine assuming everyone we have stays healthy (an assumption that has not always been a safe one, to say the least). But at least we can field a starting unit.

D-line has jumped up on my worry list with today's news, as our import depth seems to have taken a hit. If Tracy can't go, we may need to start someone who's brand new to the team.

that would be redundant

but pretty catching

No disrespect to Grant, he's good, but he wouldnt improve the offense one iota.

Looks like #CalStampeders will be missing two key defensive starters this week vs #Ticats (DB Joe Burnett the other)

are you trolling dork?

I would say Underwood

Agree with you ryan although I probably would have phrased it differently

Grant is a veteran who was having a very good season before being injured (aside - I don't remember him being out with an injury in any of his previous 3-4 seasons). He is likely going to be more reliable in coming back to the ball or finding a spot where Mathews can get the ball to him. Underwood and Toliver have played well but are in their first season in this offense and probably don't have quite the understanding that receivers like Grant, Tasker, Fantuz (when he returns) or even Sinkfield will have.

Joe Burnett's season is over with a broken ankle and ligament damage. #CFL

Might level the playing field a bit in our favour but we also have to remember that the Stamps have good talented depth players - just like we have

This would have been just the break (no pun intended) that Jasper Simmons was waiting for. Seems his agent had other plans though. I wonder if the team would want him back after what happened.

Well apparently even Winnipeg couldn’t find a spot for him as they released him a week or so ago too!
