TiCat Player/Roster Moves/Transactions

Thought I'd start a thread to encapsulate the many transactions that will undoubtedly occur over the next month and a half until training camp and into training camp.

The TiCats have already completed Free Agent camps in ...

Tampa, Florida – February 28
Miami, Florida – March 1
Dallas, Texas – March 28
Atlanta, Georgia – March 29
New Orleans, Louisiana – March 30

And will be conducting future camps in ...

San Francisco, California – April 11
Los Angeles, California – April 12
Chicago, Illinois - May 2
Buffalo, New York – May 3
Detroit, Michigan – May 4

There are typically a few signings that come from these free agent camps. If memory serves correctly ... CJ Gable, Bakari Grant & Justin Hickman are products of the California Camps. I do believe the Dallas FA Camp is a newer addition to their rotation as is Chicago. The Florida camps have been a staple for Hamilton as well as the NOLA Camp.

It appears to me ... and I could be wrong (that was weird to hear me say  ) ... but I think the TiCats are holding twice as many camps as they had in the past. I only recall them holding 3, 4, maybe 5 FA Camps in the past ... they've already held 5 this year with 5 more to come!

Anyways ... deposit any of the free agent signings that you hear about here as well as any releases after mini camp (April 28th - 30th) that will undoubtedly occur!!!

TiCats add Kelvin Bolden WR - Southern Mississippi - 6'0" - 160 pounds.

Key Takeaway ... Very fast receiver, speedster, possible returner. Spent a little time with Washington Redskins PR in 2012.

6'0", 160 lbs? He better be able to run fast, because I'm afraid he'll snap the first time he's hit.

Seriously, though, he sounds like the type of player we're missing right now, a speedster who can stretch the defence.

Under the radar 160 lbs 6 ft. speedy sounds a little like you know who with more height.

That and/or Austin is growing tired of Bakari Grant dropping catchable footballs.

The team so far this off season has seen a lot of personnel from last years squad be lost to free agency, releases, trades and the expansion draft. If I've calculated right,so far they're is a total of 15 Cats from last year who won't be here in 2014.

M.Hage-c...............expansion draft.....Ottawa
C.Walker-rb............expansion draft.....Ottawa
J.Delahunt-fb/te......expansion draft......Ottawa
H.Burris-qb............FA(released)..........Ottawa
K.Scott-ls..............FA......................Ottawa
D.Stala-wr.............released..............Montreal
M.Bucknor-db...........traded..............Winnipeg
S.Charbonneau-wr.....traded..............Calgary
J.Johnson-lb............FA...................B.C.
S.Lawrence-lb..........FA...................Minnesota(NFL)
J.Bartel-p...............traded..............Saskatchewan
S.Williams-lb/de.......traded..............Saskatchewan
B.Brohm-qb.............traded..............Winnipeg
L.Richardson-lb/de.....released...........Winnipeg
L.Congi-k................FA(released).......unsigned

I think that's everybody for now, don't think I missed anyone, but one thing is for sure and that is that Austin is certainly not going to rest on his laurels in reshaping and improving this team from last year.Just speculation on my part, but I can see a few more vets let go before the dust settles on the opener of the 2014 campaign.Oski-wee-wee  can't wait for training camp and this new season to start rolling!!!! :rockin: :rockin: :rockin:

I realize this is a little late but just to have it officially updated in this thread.

I'm guessing we'll see some movement on the roster between now & training camp.

Currently 78 players on the roster.

The Tiger-Cats have signed import offensive lineman Dominic Alford and import receiver Kelvin Bolden, the team announced today. Both players will participate in next week's mini-camp at McMaster University's Ron Joyce Stadium.

Bolden, a 6-0, 160-pound native of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, played two seasons at Southern Mississippi where he caught 104 passes for 1,393 yards and 13 touchdowns in 25 games. He spent time with the NFL’s Washington Redskins in 2012.

Alford, a 6-3, 320-pound native of Cleveland, Ohio, spent four seasons at Minnesota before NFL stints with the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers.

Bolden has been discussed already. Here's the information on import tackle Dominic Alford;

Drew Edwards has done up a preliminary depth chart mock up after mini camp for the Cats defense, including backups as well as who he thinks has the inside track for the starting positions.I have to say that I agree with his choices on the line, but as for the lb crew,I think that Kromah will end up ahead of Harris as a starter. The D-backs look about right, but I have to wonder just where players like Hobbs,Davis and Webb fit into the scheme of things. Both Hobbs and Davis were starters at the end of last season, both are young and only entering their 2nd season as pros.Dee Webb I feel could be on the bubble this year,as he lost his starters job late in the season and spent time on the IL as well.It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Webb ends up not making the cut this season and ends up either released or perhaps traded away.I'm also not sold on King as a backup,if he is reliable enough to step in to a starting role in case of injury as was shown in the Grey Cup,when Stephen was a late scratch.I'm hoping that if he is available that the team drafts Lue with either the 9th or 11th pick in the upcoming draft. So with that being said, here is Drews mock D-Lineup......Thoughts? Agree? Disagree ? Let's hear what everybody thinks.
Drew apparently will be posting his mock offense depth chart in the next day or so.I will post it as well, should be interesting to see how he has everybody lining up this season, especially on the line and in the receiver position, with the additions of FA's Myddelton and Koch as well as the opening at center and fullback/te with the departures of Hage and Delahunt. The back-up Cdn rec positions should also be interesting to see who replaces Stala and Charbonneau on the depth chart. It should also be interesting to see if C.O.Prime can successfully make the transition from LB to FB,as he switches over to offense this season.

Some thoughts/notes on the preliminary depth chart:

The D really came around last year and was impressive in the second half (once they settled down) of many late season games.

The loss of Simoni Lawrence will be HHHHUUUUGGGGEEE! Very difficult to replace that talent.

Butler shores up a weak point in the backfield. Stephen did well back there but is a cover guy and not a great run defender. Corner or half is a better fit for him. He seemed a bit over matched by bigger receivers when making tackles from safety.

Some question marks at LB.

Very similar front 4 to last year. Low sacks from that group last season and neither end is more than an average threat on the pass rush. Norwood has a great motor and can stretch a run/ swing pass to the sideline and I look forward to more of that this coming season. But still, to win they need pressure and sacks from the edge. Drew's story seems to indicate that the team has "expectations" of better play from the ends. Hard to build a team on expectation. Football requires results, not the hope of results. Great to see T. Davis back. Bulcke = stud.

Brandon Stewart will be the best "under the radar" free agent pick-up for this season.

TIGER-CATS ACQUIRE RB SOFELE FROM LIONS FOR FUTURES

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats acquired import running back/kick returner Isi Sofele from the BC Lions on Thursday in exchange for future considerations.

Sofele spent the 2013 season on the Lions practice roster. In 50 games over four seasons at California, Sofele ran for 2,619 yards and 15 touchdowns while returning 24 kickoffs for 480 yards.

The Ticats also announced that import defensive lineman Joseph LeBeau has been released.

i Know that Austin is talking about moving Stephan to CB but I can't see him being ready to take that spot as a starter, but working out their in Training camp cannot hurt.
Better fit will likley be exactly what he did at Northern Illinios play safety in cover 2 package, be Butlers back up, and be a teams demon.
Stewart should take over for Hobbs at HB. Emmanul Davis played well at CB but will have competition being brought in for sure.
Rico Murray was great and can and did play all of the DB positions. He needs to be on the field as a starter somewhere.
Harris is much better suited at Will LB for sure but Kromah will challenge him as well. Beswick may also be looking to get on the field more on defense but is he a better Will LB than Plesius could be on the roster backing up both LB spots with Bowman for sure at MLB.

Austin will continue to make the team better with constant competition but he did get a lot of spots secured from last season so that one game IR should not be so long this season. However I can see him not letting any good talent go either. Those who do not fit will be put on ice (9 game IR for first half of the season and spring some mid point when injuries pile up.
Look for Norwood to emerge this season at DE in a big way this season.

Austin has some painfull decisions to make and they wont be popular. HTC All Haunt Team will get an injection of talent this year.

Popular for the Ti Cats will be anyone who can bring them a Grey Cup.
They do have a log jam at several positions.
9 NI Olineman. between the Roster, I game IR, 9 game IR, and Practice roster Austin may be able to keep them all.
Import Receivers: Ellingson, Grant, Jones, Tasker, Koch FA. Plus there are several new imports brought in. Ellingson, Tasker, and Koch will not be going anywhere. leaving Jones and Grant. Jones being a bit older could be the odd man out provided that one of the new guys win a job somewhere on the roster. Undoubtedly Ottawa and Burris would be very interested in acquiring the under rated Jones.

Returners: Austin wanted Banks, waited for Banks, Banks became available form the NFL and Austin got backs and used him. I know Austin would like him to be a better receiver with DI spots at a premium in the CFL
Others Lamar, Moore, Sofele. All are also RBs Hybreds which can back up and be a change up back for Gable on the 42.
Could keep them all somewhere. I think likely one will go though.

Will be interesting to see if they can keep Brandon Issac with Rico Murray needing to be a starter and the nickel/SAMLB spot may be that spot. Dee Webb likely to go. Stienhaur Likes his DBs and they have added to them Webb is a left over and Stewart was signed to take his spot.

Safety competition for back up and development and practice roster spots pretty wide open with Butler and Stephan the only for sure 42 man roster guys for sure.

DTs 3 imports and 3 Canadians. Davis is going to have his hands full to keep his starting spot with Moore and Marshal breathing down his neck. All three are in there mid 20’s prime and all three have some solid pro expereince. Davis who struggles with being in shape could be out if he does not come to camp ready, or Austin could keep him around for 9 games on the IR as insurance and to assure he stays in shape.Canadians Bulcke is an All Star stud hazime and Atkinson each bring a different skill set so all three should be on the 46 or if needed the one game IR used for the purpose of expanding the roster by a few players.

DE’s Gascon-Nadon healthy and in Training camp has the door open for him to translate his great Success at laval into the CFL as a rush DE Fortin also a DE from Laval appears to be more of a long snap specialists than a DE. Would love to see him step up and be a full equal partner in the 3 man DE position.
3 import DE’s return from last year Norwood, Bordueaux, and third man in was Sam Scott from a small DII school enters his 4th pro season of combined CFL and AFL expereince

Canadian Receiver Austin has his 2 guys starting in Giguere and Fantuz. He also got the younger guys to groom that he wanted in Armstrong and Aplile. Both can play teams. Armstrong will be entering his second pro season and first full season since serving his time at Air Force. Aprille is finally out of eleigibility at Queens. Armstrong is probably more ready to actually play receiver if needed.

That was quick two of the guys I questioned about are now released. Hank may inquire management in Ottawa about Jones

The amount of turnover in the last couple of years has been staggering. Virtually all of the fan favourites of the last few years are gone. Now even some of the new guys we brought in just last year have become expendable. It's reached the point that the casual fans won't have a clue who most of these players even are on the field. I'm finding that even as a hardcore fan I've had trouble keeping up with the personnel. As soon as you start getting used to a player he gets replaced. There's no point in getting a player's jersey anymore. You're lucky if you get a year or two out of it. This kind of team-wide change doesn't happen in the NHL for example. If I want to invest in a Drew Doughty or Anze Kopitar jersey then I am fairly certain I will wear it out before that player leaves the team several years later.

I sure hope that once Austin has finished purging the players he inherited and has his personnel out on the field, that he settles down and lets the fans bond with the players. Like it was in the old days with players like Zambiasi, Mosca, Covington, Montford, Danny Mac, etc.

Along with the releases of Isaac, Jones, Husband & Tettleton ...

The Ticats also added four new bodies to the roster today. Import LB Kendrick Causey, import defensive backs Damien Jackson and Michael Ricks, and import defensive lineman Brandon Thurmond, were all signed to deals, the team announced.

Causey, a 6-0, 230-pound native of Amite County, Mississippi, played two seasons at Lincoln University where he compiled 186 defensive tackles, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups. In 2013, he finished the season ranked third in the MIAA with 116 tackles.

Jackson, a 6-2, 215-pound, native of Pineville, Louisiana, played two seasons at Ole Miss after transferring from Mississippi Gulf Coast. In 23 games with the Rebels, he registered 132 defensive tackles, one interception and one forced fumble.

Ricks, a 6-2, 203-pound, native of Courtland, Alabama, previously spent time with the Edmonton Eskimos and NFL's Baltimore Ravens. In two seasons at Stillman College, he recorded 108 defensive tackles and seven interceptions, six of which were returned for touchdowns.

Thurmond, a 6-2, 260-pound, native of Augusta, Georgia, rejoins the Ticats after spending a month on the team's practice roster last season following a training camp appearance with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons. The 2012 SWAC Defensive Player of the Year registered 63 tackles, 16.5 quarterback sacks and 25 tackles for a loss in his senior season at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Still awaiting confirmation that Dahrran Diedrick has been released ...

Dahrran Dietrick as of this posting is still listed on the current Ti-Cat roster.Jones,Isaac and Husband have all been deleted from roster and the 4 new signees are listed on roster but as of yet haven't been assigned official numbers. If and when the team makes it official,I will add Dietrick to my list of ex-Cats from 2013 as the 19th player gone from last seasons squad. As the roster sits right now they're 47 players who dressed for at least 1 game last year and 4 others who were on the roster in some capacity(il,pr,9-game)last season but didn't dress for any game action. So even with 19 deletions from a year ago,the team still has 51 players left from last years team still on the roster.I'm thinking and predicting that Austin's purging of veteran players, especially those from the Cortez regime of 2012 isn't over and we will see a few more go before the dust settles on the opener of the 2014 season. They're only 16 players left over from before Austin arrived in town out of 51 returnees on the roster. IMO don't be surprised if pre Austin players such as Dee Webb,Marc Dile,Terrence Moore and I hate to even say it but possibly even Peter Dyakowski will be shown the door either at T-camp or sometime during the season.

i can definitely see Webb being the next to go. Terrance Moore and marshall are like identical twins at DT so I can see them keeping both. Torrey Davis may be the one who has his job in jeapardy.
Dile did lose his starting RT spot form 2012 but when both Figeeoua and Simmons both went down Dile moved over to LT and did a nice job So Austin is bringing in some more competition for Import OTs but they will have to beat out dile.
Dyakowski being injured leaves the competition open for LG and Center. Wojt is one of Austin's boys so he will be safe and was the ti cats Olineman of the year pick. Wojt also has the ability to swing out to RT if needed as he did last year so if it comes down to a choice of who will be getting paid when the time comes Dyowkowsky could be out.
