Ti-Cats: Wall of Honour / Hall of Fame / Retired number thread (who should be there)

I don’t recall Earl the Pearl being such a whiner. The definition of a professional “Team” player.

That is a matter of opinion.

Browne and Tommy Joe Coffee are the 2 Ticats with 5 years of service on the wall.

By that measure Troy Davis should be up there as the all time leading rusher.

Criteria is below: (Banks checks many of the boxes)

Wall of Honour inductees are chosen by a 7 person selection committee comprised of an Alumni representative and Wall of Honour Inductee, a Community and Media representative and three Tiger-Cat Club reps, selected Joe in a two-stage voting process from an initial list of 10 nominees.

Criteria used to select candidates include:

CFL Recognition: Selected to CFHOF, CFL all-star and/or individual awards

Statistical achievements for his position(s)

Leadership Roles: Captain and/or play caller

Winning Achievements: Grey Cup & Division Championships

Media Recognition: Acknowledged for accomplishments by local or national media

Club Longevity: Prolonged and successful career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Character: Exemplified being a Tiger-Cat on and off the field including community involvement

Actually small correction on this . Tommy Joe was actually a member of the team for six years not five (67-72). He won two Cups with the team in that time span . He was also twice selected as the East MOP in that time (67,70) he was also a 3 time selection to the East All-Star team (67,68,70) .

Banks will probably be up there someday but I’m willing to bet anybody that a guy like Simoni will be up there way before Speedy ever is .

I would put Simoni up there before Banks no questions asked.

And if Simoni helps deliver a home GC, number retirement would be on the table IMO.

Lewis Porter, Howard Fields or David Shaw are more deserving.

Al Brenner , 15 interceptions in 1972, average 10 yds per…..is deserving .( didn’t research any deeper)
Brown deserves to be there ,glad he is …

Brenner had 35 intercepts in his 4 years with the Cats . Les Brown had 33 intercepts in 5 years with the Cats .

There are 2 very important criteria on that list that Banks falls incredibly short on.

Speedy will never be up there.

Best what?

I question, in a team game, which I consider THE team game, why being on the winning side in a Grey Cup game is considered an important criterion when choosing individual players for awards and other recognition.
Yet, I believe Winfield, as Dr. Snuggles pointed out, is the only Wall of Honour player who was never on a Tiger-Cat Grey Cup championship team. There's also, at least, one other (Browne) who was, but did not play in that game.

And as luck and irony would have it his replacement for that game was Jim Rockford who wound up scoring a TD on a blocked punt recovery in the end zone .

I don’t think they would have excluded Zambiasi, Covington and DiPietro if that 26-point comeback in 1986 had fallen short.

I also think that there are several other players from that ‘86’ team that should get mention and consideration for the WOH in the future . Players such as
Tony Champion , Mike Walker , Howard Fields , Steve Stapler , Leo Ezerins , and Jason Riley .

Here is the up to date list of the current members of the exclusive WOF Club

There's no exact formula for things like Hall of Fame, Wall of Honours and jersey retirements.

There's ingredients to a recipe. Championships is just one of them. I don't think anyone gets included or excluded from the above exclusively due to one criteria... But they all count.

By the same token you could say "well why does 1000 yd seasons matter?"

"Interceptions can be tipped balls"

"QB rushing TDs could be sneaks"

We can do this all day.

I was talking about Earl and Speedy as returners/ receivers .

Not sure about your entire list. But Mike Walker serves as evidence that it can be easier to get into the Cdn Football Hall of Fame than it is to get on the Ticats Wall of Honour. Hitchcock is an example of the opposite - along with others I dare not name.

Fun fact: Speedy Banks had as many 1,000-yd seasons with HAM (three) as Stapler and Champion combined. He is also tied with DiPietro and Tasker, and one ahead of D.J.Flick, C.Yeast and K.Baker (and possibly others). Speedy is behind Winfield (five) and Flutie (four).

And not Mike Kerrigan?

Mike Walker would appear to be a glaring oversight.
