Thanks. And worth every dime I got paid for it.
Another thought about Mike Jones.
Does anyone know how he earned his “Canadian” credentials? CFL.ca shows him with “birthplace: Byran, Texas” and “school: Southern University.”
I’m guessing he’s Canadian in the way Singleton or our draft pick Chapman are. With Chapman, people said you can’t blame a guy for wanting to play in his own country. Jones may think of his country as being the USA. However, in the CFL he would get the premium for his status, while in the new U.S. leagues he is just a guy like everyone else.
Jones apparently also attended and played high school ball at James Rudder High which is located in Byran ,Texas . Looks like the plot thickens as to why or how exactly he qualifies as a Canadian player ?
Born there , played high school there and went to and played college ball there as well . If I’m correct I think I recall seeing or reading somewhere that his mother is Canadian from Toronto and his father is American but don’t quote me on it .
He spent his summers in Toronto with his grandparents. His grandpa was an accomplished boxer. There is an article on 3 Down Nation from 2016 written by Justin Dunk that explains the Mike Jones story. I’m on a device where I can’t cut and paste the link but a quick search on 3DN should bring it right up.
Here it is…
The funny thing is that by next year your analysis might have a handful of different names in it who are not even on the roster yet. Last year at this time who could have predicted Addison, Jones, Buren and McDaniel starting in a playoff game? Nowadays you need at least 8 good receivers on the roster since 3 will likely get injured.
Thanks Krisiun. Mystery solved!According to 3DN, he was actually born in Toronto. Contradicts the info on the CFL website.
Interesting story, too. He was being scouted by CFL scouts before they even realized he could qualify as a NAT. Even Mike only realized at the last minute that he could register for the CFL draft.
The Southern Ontario connection may deter him from doing something crazy, like signing with Regina or Manitoba.
I think we need to continually find new INT receiving talent, the way EDM or CAL do.
In 2018 we basically found no rookie starters until the last game of the season with Addison (via the Argos). As for why no one realized he was that good after watching him in practice all year, that’s a different question.
In 2017 we found Jalen Saunders.
In 2016 … no one, really.
In 2015 we found Toliver.
In 2014 we found Sinkfield (via the Argos).
In 2013 we found Tasker, Banks and Ellingson. Arguably our top three WR recruits of the past six years, and all joined in the same season. Since then we’ve come nowhere close to adding that kind of talent.
Maybe we’re due again in 2019. If we have four INT starters consisting of Banks, Tasker, Addison and a promising rookie, plus a solid NAT, I think we’ll be in good shape.
Poor analysis. We found Brian Tyms in 2016.
Yeah. There’s been a few that haven’t worked out in the long term. Tiquan Underwood was another. That’s why Expat left them off his list.
I was kidding
We should not forget what Bakari Grant brought to the team in that time.
Actually Bakari was one of a threesome of newbies along with Chris Williams and Aaron Kelly who all made the squad in the 2011 season . The emergence of these three rooks that year along with the presence of some sophomore guy name of Thigpen eventually spelled the end for three receiver vets when Mo Mann , Arland Bruce and Marquay McDaniel were all shown the door being traded or released before the end of the season .
Took a Maurice Mann injury, a cut foot from a shower stall, to get Williams into the lineup.
Mind boggles if that injury never happened, …Wms just sits on practice roster then released then signed by TOR.
We gave the Esks our top DB Chris Thompson to get Mann. I hated that trade. :o
Talked better than he played.
YUP, that one was right up there for bad trades. He was a great DB.
Here’s another thought. In 2017 many of us felt our receiving corps was kind of weak on the whole, especially after Toliver went down in game 1.
Looking back at the game 2 depth chart in 2017, it included these players: Tasker, Saunders, Mike Jones, Banks (as a backup). Also Tyms and Junior Collins. At that time both Saunders and Jones were brand new starters.
If we had those same four guys starting next year (Tasker, Banks, Saunders, Jones, and someone else), most of us would think our receiving corps is pretty strong.
By adding Addison to that list,
I would think real strong and he is already signed along with Tasker
I still would like some height from the outside.
