The trend is not our friend. Not by any means:

Grey Cup Games

11 December 1937: Toronto Argonauts 4 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 3
10 December 1938: Toronto Argonauts 30 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 7
1 December 1945: Toronto Argonauts 35 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 0
30 November 1946: Toronto Argonauts 28 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 6
29 November 1947: Toronto Argonauts 10 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 9
25 November 1950: Toronto Argonauts 13 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 0
20 November 2022: Toronto Argonauts 24 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23

Anyone see a pattern here? The Argonauts have owned the Blue Bombers in Grey Cup games. Coach O’Shea certainly has his work cut out for him. He’s got a lot of game film to analyze.

But the Blue Bombers are 4-3 in other playoff games against the Argonauts in November meaning it’s just something about the Grey Cup being at stake that’s made the Argonauts a nightmare for the Blue Bombers:

Other Playoff Games

22 November 1987: Toronto Argonauts 19 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 3
20 November 1988: Winnipeg Blue Bombers 27 Toronto Argonauts 11
12 November 1989: Winnipeg Blue Bombers 30 Toronto Argonauts 7
18 November 1990: Winnipeg Blue Bombers 20 Toronto Argonauts 17
17 November 1991: Toronto Argonauts 32 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 3
5 November 2006: Toronto Argonauts 31 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 27
18 November 2007: Winnipeg Blue Bombers 19 Toronto Argonauts 9

I don’t know. Does seeing the Double Blue make the Bombers choke in Grey Cups?

History doesn’t win games ( and I cheer for Argos)

He who doesn’t remember history is doomed to repeat it.

History be darned. WPG should win.

Huh?! Clearly because they won’t prepare to make sure the same thing(s) does not recur.

I know I’ve linked this one before. There isn’t much available from this era so it’s a nice one to have.

While that general statement is true for things such as war, the economy, famines, pandemics, etc. I don’t see how it applies here.

The teams that played each other in past Grey Cups are totally different than the teams playing next week. The Jets beat the Oilers in a playoff series 4-0 despite losing to them constantly in the 80’s. History was irrelevant there just as it is here.

The only supernatural voodoo to worry about here is the Argos penchant for winning Grey Cups even when they aren’t a great team, like two years ago. Currently 7 in a row. It is known.

But seriously, the most important real factor is that the Argos will be starting Nick Arbuckle with Cameron Dukes in reserve. I like our chances. There have already been comparisons made to Dinwiddie starting for Glenn, although the Argos situation isn’t quite as dire as that was. History shmistory.

You are aware that the Argos will be starting Arbuckle or Dukes … That offsets an awful lot of history.

Just a side note… Toronto had home field advantage in all the Grey Cup games other than 2022…and pre 1950’s transportation was mostly by train. Another huge disadvantage.
1955 was the first time the Grey Cup was played in the west (Vancouver)

No. The Argos are the Argos and the Bombers must be prepared to face whichever players dress for the game, i.e. whether it’s Joe Krol, McLeod Bethel-Thompson, Chad Kelly, Nick Arbuckle or Cameron Dukes at QB, whether it’s Ulysses Curtis, Nick Volpe, Andrew Harris, A.J. Ouellette, Ka’Deem Carey, Deonta McMahon or Daniel Adeboboye at HB, whoever, the Bombers need to be ready to face whoever they see out there.

Consider. The Bombers appeared to be the far superior team in 2022. Yet when relative unknown Chad Kelly stepped onto the field at QB, the Bombers just weren’t ready and ended up losing the game. The Blue Bombers absolutely, positively must learn from history and be prepared to face whoever is in Double Blue on Sunday.

A very valid observation! So there may be hope after all so long as Coach O’Shea and the Bombers are prepared to play whichever players the Argos field.

I don’t agree. The players who are no longer there are not relevant. Past Grey Cups aren’t relevant. Regular season games aren’t relevant.

I also don’t agree that the Bombers weren’t ready and lost last year as a result. O’Shea always has them ready. The issue isn’t that, it’s execution, bounces and luck.

The last 3 Grey Cups were won by the skin of the winning team’s teeth. The Ticats in ‘21 and the Bombers the last two years could just as easily have won those games. They also would have been lucky to win just as the winners were. The winning team didn’t dominate any of those games and you can’t say that they deserved to win or that the losers deserved to lose. The winners just got a little luckier and as it turns out made one more play than the losers. The games could hardly have been closer.

Last year the Als threw a medium range pass on 3rd down that was barely caught. Great play but no one would have batted an eye if the pass wasn’t caught and Winnipeg won the game. The talk then would have been about how Winnipeg was a dynasty and they found a way to win and they just got it done, blah, blah. If Nichols hadn’t tipped Masoli’s second down pass then Hamilton would likely have won in ‘21. If Winnipeg had even an average place kicker in ‘22 they would have won.

Winnipeg could easily have won 4 in a row or just 1 of 4 or 3 of 4. There is nothing supernatural in play here. All a team can do is put themselves in the game, which means they have a chance to win. The last Grey Cup that wasn’t decided by a razor thin hair was in 2019.

Good points all. Hamilton fans have taken their recent Cup losses hard. As you say, they could easily have been wins.

A very good point. Saskatchewan was in a slew of Grey Cups before the modern era began in 1958. The East was always stronger back then.

Predator (Kelly) was the curse of the Bombers - he got into the game only because MBT injured his thumb on some Bomber’s helmet. MBT was not doing that well at all - Bombers had the relatively slow guy contained.
However, when Predator entered he was full of energy like a rabid Rhino. Bombers were starting to run outta gas and all the sudden this creepy crawler starts racking up runs and tosses a few passes to surpass a gassed Bomber squad. Roll of the dice.

Now, Mr. Buckles is in the captain’s chair and we’ll see what type of mayhem he plans to unload on the Bomber D.

Remember, this isn’t a Richie Hall soft serve D.

Its a Jordan Younger juggernaut.

Anyways, I think if the Argos want any chance to win, they’ll have to hold the brazen Bombers to under 19 pts.

Thats not impossible - especially if Zach shows up a bit off the program and the BB o-line can’t contain Argo’s D7.

BOLO Alert…it would seem that someone has kidnapped @Lyle_B_Style, his avatar appears and words are posted, yet nothing he says sounds right, we must study his words to see if there’s a clue as to where he’s being held. I fully suspect the Argos have captured our mascot.

“Anyways, I think if the Argos want any chance to win, they’ll have to hold the brazen Bombers to under 19 pts.”

Seriously does that sound like the Lyle we all know? I for one, are willing to send all my packets of ketchup, mustered and soya sauce to cover the cost of the ransom. We’ll need I’m back before Grey Cup as afterwards they’ll no longer have any need for him and send him aimlessly wandering down Toronto’s Yonge St. (the world’s longest street), Damn you Argos!

Precisely my point! The Blue Bombers better not be taking the game lightly because the Argos are going with “backup” Nick Arbuckle. The Blue Bombers must be ready to face the Argonauts regardless of the QB the Argos start. And that’s even if the Argos re-animate Joe Krol!

I agree! Chad Kelly certainly preyed on the Bombers’ defence in 2022. And if the Bombers aren’t prepared to play against the Argos with whoever at the helm on Sunday, their losing streak to the Double Blue will continue. When you’re 0-7, it’s time for a gut check.

Based on team strength, coaching, momentum Bombers are 10 pt favorites.

Based on CFL history - Argos remain slight favorites

O’Shea gets his wish. Bombers are slight underdogs - to history!
