The 2024 CFL Combine

I really fail to see what first overall draft pick has to do with the combine…

And I fail to see how any functional system would generate so many posts about the combine on the very last day!

Good-bye you damn System fix yourself!

Each year the CFL Combine presented by New Era presents an entirely new set of competitors.

With each fresh crop of future CFL talent comes different strengths, weaknesses, conversations, sticking points and challenges for teams and myself to truly understand the full package of every player.

It was a thought that lurked around the back of Brendan Taman’s mind for years.

Taman, the Ottawa REDBLACKS’ director of pro personnel, worked for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1999-2008. Through that time and while working for a number of teams over a 30-plus-year run in the CFL, he’d always heard stories about a haunted room at the Fort Garry Hotel in downtown Winnipeg.

You might think after a childhood full of cold prairie winters that Daniel Okpoko would have headed south to suit up for the San Diego Aztecs with a peace sign out the window, never to be seen in these parts — at least in the winter — again.

Each year at the CFL Combine presented by New Era the testing scores and body composition of prospective CFL players gets my wheels turning, imagining what they could be in the league. For the last five drafts or so I’ve been writing this piece as a thought experiment comparing hard numbers to what is a much more dynamic process.

He didn’t suit up, didn’t make a tackle, or bring down a quarterback in anger. Yet, on the final day of the CFL Combine presented by New Era last Sunday Willie Jefferson did what he has so often done for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers: he was everywhere on the field doing his thing and dominating.

WINNIPEG — Dhel Duncan-Busby is one of the hottest names at the CFL Combine presented by New Era.

Each year the CFL Draft takes on its own unique shape. Positional group strengths and weaknesses are the basis from which everything else seems to grow out around, but one of my personal favourite tendencies is the homecoming for many NCAA athletes.

Ethan Kalra’s goals for the CFL Combine presented by New Era were to show teams across the league what he’s actually about.

CFL.ca’s Marshall Ferguson said that he saw Kalra as an outside guard at the next level

W-T-F is an “outside guard” … do they mean OT or is it a designation for which side he plays?

Good question and I don’t know. I see via Google some players are mentioned as such but couldn’t find a definition. Maybe it’s the same as a strong side guard? ie

" The Inside Guard. – The inside guard plays to the strong side of the front, and can be a slower, less skilled lineman. He is protected heavily on both sides, and we find that against most defenses he spends his time blocking back. This is the first place you can hide a player who is not very good but must play out of necessity as you haven’t got many linemen, or he is the biggest of the bunch.

The Strong Guard – The Strong guard is the next best offensive lineman to the Quick Tackle for us. That is simply because we like to have him actively pulling in this scheme. We want a guy who can skip pull and navigate the surface to insert and get his hands on the play side inside linebacker. In addition, we like him to be able to identify when our strong tackle needs to cut because there are interior defenders threatening.

I wonder if Jon’s fingers are sore yet from dealing with the gazillion combine forums?

I have recognized some as duplicate, even pre combine. I’m just starting to zap those and not even move them over to this thread. I may not have identified all duplicates as such but I’m trying.

I think he means move outside to guard.

Which means what exactly? An outside guard is a specific player position, I guess???. A wide receiver upon snap of the ball could technically go right into the line and become a tackle or guard actually. ???
No idea what is mean’t with a specific position of what is mean’t by an outside guard.
