If there is only one core flaw in replay review in all gridiron leagues that can be fixed next, it’s this one.
The default that should be in place for ANY ruled turnover or scoring play,
beyond anything close in the last 3 or 2 minutes of a half (i.e. player ruled down by contact, catch ruled an incomplete pass, et cetera),
should be for AUTOMATIC review, beyond the current practice, of ALSO
ANY POTENTIAL turnovers or POTENTIAL scoring play.
All other calls require a challenge by the head coach.
Some wrongly believe the officials are taken out of the equation with such automatic reviews. That’s simply not true. There are some calls that to the naked eye are so close that they literally could go either way within such a slim margin.
The officials who are there and must rule in real time. They get it right more often than not too.
As has always been the standard for video review but has NOT consistently been followed, ONLY if the video evidence is clear AND obvious should the ruling by the officials on the field be overturned.
Of course for fans, even correct calls piss off many of them anyway as we hear from their stadium reactions when a call in favour of the home team is overturned, so we should not be concerned with a few calls that could go either way just not going in favour of one team.
Homers not with a team should be nowhere on the field or in the replay booth anyway. For those who prefer officiating chaos or for the “crowd favourite” to win most of the time, just go watch WWE or WCW already.
Or in many years since about 2002, the NBA!
