Taulia Tagovailoa

As expected, Taulia was not selected in the 2024 NFL Draft. Following the Draft he agreed to sign with the Seattle Seahawks as an Undrafted FA. He will attend their rookie mini-camp in a few weeks time, but at this point he may simply be competing for that fourth “Camp Arm” for their Training Camp. IMO Tagovailoa’s most optimistic prospects are to catch on to an NFL Practice roster for a couple of seasons . . . this is a future CFL QB.

I have mentioned in the past that the Hamilton Tiger-Cats had Taulia on their NegList once upon a time. No idea if this is still the case. Is there anyone on this Forum that can corroborate?? Here is one of many NFL scouting reports that are available online.

PS: Sam Hartman [Notre Dame & Wake Forest prior to that] finds himself in a similar situation

@PatLynch thank you for sharing that snippet of the Tiger-Cats’ NegList.
Noted that Taulia Tagovailoa is still on the list . . . I think he initially landed on the list when he was still a Sophomore (or earlier), so we see that recruitment of some of these players is a very long process, with no guarantees of a payoff at the end.

But I have also noted that Adam Plant jr. (Bob’'s son??) is on the 'Cats current Training Camp roster . . . so there is evidence of a successful pursuit.

The Official Pie in the Sky list.

Same situation with the first name on the list, Shamar Bridges, signed by the Cats three months ago.

Since @PatLynch was good enough to provide us with that snippet of the Tiger-Cats’ NegList, I thought I would delve a little deeper into the status of the 5 QB’s included on this small portion of the overall list.

3 of the 5 were NFL Draft eligible in 2024; none were drafted:

  • Taulia Tagovailoa: as mentioned above, signed as UFA w/ Seattle Seahawks;
  • Andrew Peasley: from Josh Allen’s alma mater [Wyoming], signed as UFA w/ NY Jets;
  • Austin Reed: signed as UFA w/ Washington Redskins (or whatever they call themselves nowadays).

All 3 will be attending Rookie mini-camps with their new teams over the next few weeks. This is not a guarantee that they will be invited to Training Camp. The Tiger-Cats’ personnel people will be keeping tabs on their status.

The other two did not declare themselves eligible for the draft:

  • Thomas Castellanos: returning to Boston College for his Junior season in 2024.
  • DeQuan Finn: has decided to transfer to Baylor as a 5th year Senior.

Please note that this is just a small portion of the NegList; there are a least another dozen QBs on the Tiger-Cats’ NegList, reflecting the importance of the position in the CFL.

Shaky start for Tagovailoa at Seattle Seahawks’ Rookie mini-camp this past weekend . . .

4. Geno Smith and Sam Howell won’t have to worry about being threatened by an undrafted signal caller.

If there’s a position that faces unfair circumstances at a three-day rookie minicamp, quarterbacks have to try and learn a new playbook in quick order and take the field having no prior experience throwing to any of their receivers on top of it. For that reason, the results on the field shouldn’t be expected to be sharp and it can be a major challenge completing passes consistently amid such an unideal situation.

With that said, neither Chevan Cordeiro or Taulia Tagovailoa, a tryout quarterback from Maryland, found much of a groove on Friday, struggling to throw with accuracy all afternoon.

In the case of Cordeiro, who played his last two seasons at San Jose State after starting his college career at Hawaii, he uncorked several low one-hoppers from the pocket and also threw behind his intended target several times during team drills. As for Tagovailoa, the Big Ten’s all-time leader in passing yardage seemed to play tight throughout the practice, frequently overthrowing receivers on deep balls and at one point leaving a receiver hanging out to dry on a go ball that sailed 15 feet over the wideout’s head.

As Macdonald said after practice on Friday, everyone should feel more comfortable and in sync in the second session on Saturday, and it’s possible both signal callers could bounce back with much better practices. But if the first minicamp practice was any indication, Cordeiro and Tagovailoa probably won’t be viable options as a third signal caller behind Smith and Howell, and Seattle may be on the lookout for other options in OTAs and leading up to camp.

What is this wonderful news that we are hearing today ??

Thank you Ed Hervey & Orlondo. But this process started a long long time ago, long before either of these gentlemen were in their current positions. I hope that Steve Milton will report how long ago Taulia Tagovailoa landed on the NegList of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. After a very long pursuit, the investment bears some fruit.

Now he has to demonstrate that he is worthy of the QB2 roster spot !!

I don’t know much about him. What’s the expectation on his potential? Could he be a starter in the CFL?

I’d wait for either Dunk or Naylor to confirm this.
Arash Madani IS the “source” for this, after all…

If you’re letting anybody go you’re letting go Frost
Even though I love to see them cut bo
Hamilton can’t justify it to most of their fans
I think Powell and Mitchell positions are set in stone at least for a few weeks

I didn’t think Powell looked great in either game. For now he’s number 2 but Frost looks like a better passer. Hard to say where these guys wind up. Tagavailoa would be the most mobile of any qb
out there.

This is all great speculation, but until there’s a confirmed signing by the team/League, all we have to go on is a “report” from a “sports journalist” who often outright lies about the CFL for his coroprate overlords at Rogers.

One wonders why this isn’t being reported on 3DN or TSN…

5’10" makes his NFL prospects unlikely.

  • Three-year starter who was voted team captain at the end of 2023.
  • Has rapid-fire foot quickness in his pocket setup.
  • Expedites his release when pressure is mounting.
  • Can elude the rush and extend plays as needed.
  • Throws deep ball with ideal trajectory for target to run under it.

Weaknesses

  • Falls short of prototypical size for his position.
  • Subpar touchdown-to-interception ratio during career.
  • Struggles to slow the game down.
  • Lacks arm strength to consistently push the deep ball.
  • At times, completely obviously to lurking defenders.

Sorry, but I have to disagree.

Being 5’ 10" is not a setback, necessarily.

Do you not recall a Doug Flutie who I believe was about the same height?

So long as he can be elusive, the height matters not.

Vernon Adam’s…5’11”.

5’10” qbs in the NFL are not a thing.
Height matters

Drew Brees is 6’ 209 but players and clubs have been known to fudge those numbers . Eddie Lebaron was the shortest NFL QB . Kyler Murray is 5’ 10" and Russell Wilson is 5’ 11" .
It’s not the size of the dawg in the fight but the size of the fight in the dawg according to Michael Vick ( 6’ 0" 210 )
