Tailgating is a big part of the fan experience in the NFL and with college football down in the states. I have only been to Argos games and there is not much tailgating there. What about the rest of the CFL? Is there tailgating? Is it a big thing and if not, why?
Calgary actually had the last tailgate party sponsored by CJAY 92 :rockin: (local rock station). There is a LOT of tailgating before the Calgary games (maybe that's why their not in the stands ... their still parting outside! )!
It works out side stadiums that have the big parking lots. Buffalo is surrounded by these huge parking lots and there are miles of tailgating. In Ottawa the new parking lot is going underground so it's going to be fun to barbecue below ground.
I think with the new Hamilton and Ottawa stadiums they will set up areas at either end zones for a tailgate type party area.
Considering this country has the most restrictive liquor laws outside of the Arab world, it makes any kind of tailgating completely laughable. When I was in London, I talked to a cop while drinking a beer at the Camden Town Locks, and he honestly thought I was BSing when I told him that cops in Canada actually pour people's beers out.
Yes it is illegal in England too, but he stated that the police don't waste their time with petty matters like that. Pretty much everyone was down by the locks was having picnics and drinking... There were no fights and nobody got out of hand... The acted like adults because they were treated like adults.... Then look at Vancouver, Everyone was treated like children, and thus they acted like children. I blame our archaic liquor laws for the riots there. Maybe not he instigators, but the first time offenders were already feeling like vigilantes just by drinking in public....lol.... it's only a small step in someone's mind to actually break some windows, or loot, when they already feel like a criminal, irreguardless if their crime is legal in 90% of the world
It would be a great marketing tool , to attract new fans to the CFL. I drive 3 hours to Fargo and their tailgate is better than anything the CFL has. The game is secondary and I found it boring but the atmosphere is great !
Yes it is laughable, AND on top of the archaic booze laws, we are the only country where governments actually sell the booze!!! They have created a monopoly and they set the price not the industry. Even restaurants/bars etc can not buy directly from distillers/brewers they must buy from the government monopoly. It’s pretty bad when you can go across the border at Niagara and buy a 30 pack of Canadian beer in cans for $20 bucks at Walmart. Our government actually has a law that states that beer must be in bottles and sold cheaper than cans, even though it’s dirt cheap to produce a steel can than a bottle. Of course the law is to protect the bottle industry that is entirely located in Quebec, while the steel industry located in Ontario get to make the few cans.
It seems most Ontarians are happy that with the government monopoly , but they wouldn’t put up with it in any other industry.
I live in west Ottawa now with in the city there are strict laws and you can't be froma corner store but 20 minutes from my house in Lanark County they have agnecy stores where its more or less part of a corner store.
It might be (a great marketing tool), but maybe not.
If a large % of fans get loaded and stuffed in the parking lot largely on their own dime, they’re not going to be buying much of your overpriced beer and lukewarm food in the stadium, are they? Not to mention the security issues in the stands surrounding those who had BA levels of .15 when they walked into the park.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see it happen but doubt it ever would.
i would be indifferent if the government raised the price/tax on alcohol. i don’t drink, so i couldn’t care less.
if it’s too expensive, people wouldn’t buy it. but, clearly they make it a priority to purchase a non-necessity, so good on the government.
raise taxes on smokes, too.
cigarettes, alcohol and gambling are a taxation of the stupid, IMO.
people complain and complain, but never do anything about it.
energy costs are going up - complain ( where, a smart person would install solar panels on their roof to have cost certainty )
gas prices are out of control - complain ( where a smart person would buy a hybrid/electric vehicle to minimize the impact )
alcohol is too expensive - complain ( a smart person would just change their lifesyle and cut back or quit all together )
smokes are too expensive - complain ( quit smoking )
But you missed the point totally - I wasn’t so much bashing the price but the monopoly
yes all governments tax booze, but our government not only taxes booze but they set the price and they are the only ones allowed to sell it. That’s a MONOPOLY, the private sector is not allowed to sell booze.

and why do you bash the monopoly? Because of the exorbitant prices that's why.
If prices are low, you would not bother to cast aspersions on the big bad monopoly.
of course it is all about price.
Don’t kid yourself, nor us.

No problem. That only costs thousands of dollars upfront and takes over a decade to recoup the money (unless you’re farther north in which case it never does), but we all have thousands of dollars lying around, right?
gas prices are out of control - complain ( where a smart person would buy a hybrid/electric vehicle to minimize the impact )
Get a car that's thousands more expensive and again takes years to get the savings. But hey, we all have thousands lying around, and of course we can all afford new cars.
alcohol is too expensive - complain ( a smart person would just change their lifesyle and cut back or quit all together )
The only reason why alcohol is too expensive is because the government massively inflates the price with taxes. Since it's politicians doing that, complaining is a perfectly rational way to get it changed. Unless you live near the Quebec border of course, then we just drive over there. (The NB government complains about that "smuggling" all the time, and it's adorable how they seem to believe anybody gives a damn what they think.)
I’ll also add - the storage (batteries) that you presently need to recycle for solar panels / windmills are atrociously harmful to the environment. The installation cost for me 2 years ago (and I got a very good deal) was under $5/Watt. We consume about 1600 a month (we have heavy usage, I would think the average is under 900). Now, we needed to put a 3700W system in to allow for peak usage and battery decay. We’ll call that 15K, and about 250-300 a year in maintenance…which we will just ignore…so…power is at about 0.06/W…that’s 96 bucks a month…so yeah…13 years and she’s all paid off…about 17 with the maintenance…and than in 8 years (or less if there is damage) I replace panels. Not really worth it, but what the heck right?
As for cars…great idea, so long as you never require to park outside for more than a few hours in -30C
As for booze…a smart person would question why Canada is one of the more expensive places in the world for drinking, among other things (ie cell phones, gas in the western hemisphere, bottles water…)
Getting back on topic, here in Vancouver we tailgate at Quebec and Terminal, across the street from the big silver ball Science World, between the skytrain station and the McDonalds. Just show up in any team colors and introduce yourself. Someone will have shrimp or kebab on the BBQ for you. As long as you clean up after yourself and keep your bevvy in an umarked cup you are always welcome.
In Toronto, there is a small group of (awesome!) Argos AND TiCat fans that tailgate at a small lot I can't remember the intersection, York and Bremner I think, I can verify that when I get home (I still have the map that Dave drew for me to find the place ). Hung out with them last thanksgiving. Super guys.
In Hamilton you can't miss the tailgate it is HUGE. Of course they are taking the year off since the stadium is being redone, but the park 2 blocks south of Ivor Wynne is called Scott Park right on King St. CAN NOT MISS IT. All the cars park right on the grass on the baseball diamonds, line up and haul out the BBQs. All the TiCat AND Argos fans are there. Or at least will be back there next season.
