Support Our Troops Night

Agreed.

Equating Bin Laden to Nazi Germany is a ridiculous notion.

I think you watched too much American news during the Bush administration…

You (and many others like you) really have no clue. Do you just go around regurgitating crap you hear from American media? Your ignorance is off the charts.

Zenstate, all the poster wanted was consideration for one night to show respect for our people in uniform. That was all, no mention of anything else, just respect. NO POLITICS, remember.

Why don't you save your leftist, Yankee hating comments for the CBC web site, you will find a lot of company there.

On the contrary. I don’t take too much to heart from the American media and especially during the Bush/Cheney regime.

What I do know is that the threat to the West right now is terrorism and that doesn’t require huge regiments of armies landing on our beach heads or waves of bombers attacking us from the sky.

Our greatest vulnerability is technological (computer systems), biological and economic terrorism.

This is why we have to keep the pressure on groups like Al Qaeda who wage their war and attacks quietly and without warning. Our weakness is that they can have their “soldiers” living amongst us (terrorist cells) and as long as they are successful in blending in with the population, there’s not much we can do until they strike. And they will. We all found that out on Sept. 11, 2001

So, yes, our efforts in Afghanistan to bust up Al Qaeda and the Taliban and other rogue terrorist groups and fanatical leaders is paramount to the rest of the world.

Tragically, a lot of their funding comes from the drug trade in North America and that’s something that us North Americans had best wake up to.

I think our Canadian soldiers realize all of this and are bravely fighting the good fight for all of us and our future generations.

Of course, our thirst for oil complicates the whole mess. I’m not naive about that.

We need electric cars, more nuclear power and lots of wind farms to supply the grid.

To steer this back on the original topic, haven't we always had an Armed Forces night in the schedule?

It seems to me that up until recently, there has always been one game a year where the troops from the Argylls and the RHLI show up with some of their vehicles and equipment to meet the public and answer question and supply literature.

I don't have a problem with it, if they play the national anthem at sporting events, a logical extension of this could be that it is fine to have a support the troops night as well. And Don Cherry was allowed to talk a lot about it on HNIC on CBC during a NHL game, well Coach's Corner I think it was, I didn't see it but heard about it.

Deerhunter you are right, the team has held nights before to honour those who have served and those that are now serving. Not every year, but often. Local units and bands putting on displays. Equipment outside the stadium, even a tank one year. Same idea as honouring emergency services night. Cruisers, Fire Trucks, EMT and Ambulance. We do have a game on Canada Day!

Additionally, the fly-overs from the Warplane Heritage Museum have always been a tribute to our Armed Forces in a way. And the cadets have always been involved in presenting the huge Canadian Flag during the anthems.

I think the Ticats have a pretty good history of honouring our men and women in uniform. (past and present)

8) And if you, (like many smug Canadians), think that we are immune from any type of terrorist attack in this country, then it is you that has no clue, and is the ignorant one here !!!
Canada is hated just as much by these terrorist groups, and Bin Laden, as the USA is !!!!!

The above quoe is good, and then you go on to say…

Why don't you save your leftist, Yankee hating comments for the CBC web site, you will find a lot of company there.
Not only are you hypocritical, you are also mean spirited and spiteful. No need for that.

I mostly disagree. Anyone want to take tis over to the “Off Topic” board?

I started on right here: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=36539

Please, let’s be respectful in our disagreements.

Kirk, you a probably right, but the events of the last few days have left me bitter with posts on various news sites that just echo what this person was saying.

Obviously a very emotional topic with the recent deaths of the 4 Canadian soldiers. How could you not choke up listening to the tough Don Cherry choke up as he payed tribute to the fallen on Coaches Corner on Saturday?

I think the entire league should dedicate an entire week to the Canadian troops. Teams could play in camouflage uniforms (one team in green camo, the other in tan/sand camo) with the teams’ usual font, striping and logos in those colours.

Auction the jerseys with benefits going to veterans and the families of those who have died.

Hold 50/50 and other such fundraisers during the games.

It’s a good way for us, the average Canadians, to contribute to the support of the troops and their families. I bet you’d see a surge in attendance.

Applause goes to Don Cherry and OPP Commisioner Fantino.

We're too busy burying our war dead to deal with Fox News' gutless Gutfield

Fox News mocks military

"The Canadian military wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white capri pants."

 • Greg Gutfeld on Fox TV's Red Eye.

First, though, we will bury our latest war dead.

Numbers 113, 114, 115, 116.

And unlike in the United States – where the policy has been to bring home returning fallen soldiers under a cloak of secrecy and without public appreciation – today thousands of Canadians will be on the bridges and overpasses of the Highway of Heroes to pay their respects.

"I didn't even know they were in the war," Fox panelist Doug Benson said.

He's ignorant!

Tell that to the families of Master Cpl. Scott Vernelli, 28, Cpl. Tyler Crooks, 24, Trooper Jack Bouthillier, 20, and Trooper Corey Joseph Hayes, 22 who are arriving home in flag-draped coffins today.

"I thought that's where you go if you don't want to fight – you go chill in Canada," added Benson.

He's also not funny.

If there ever is a draft in the U.S. again, we'll have to remember that if he decides to dodge!

Host Gutfield added: "Isn't this the perfect time to invade this ridiculous country?"

The ugly American, like his pal, is also not funny.

Invade us? I hope Gutfield and Benson are the first two Americans to cross the border. I'd have some pancakes, back bacon and maple syrup for them, and remind them about what happened the last time Americans tried to invade us in 1812.

And then I would show them the names of the dead men and women who died along side their soldiers. That's who they made fun of.

Another panelist, speaking on Canada, made the comment: "I'm so disappointed in them."

This is, several Canadian military sources have told me, how we felt back in 2003 when the Americans all but abandoned its post in Afghanistan and shipped thousands of soldiers to Iraq instead. This meant Canada was left to do the heavy lifting in southern Afghanistan as the 116 dead and several hundred wounded soldiers have showed.

They fact that these people would make a comedy bit out of this is classless, reprehensible and the lowest of low.

"Who cares what they say down there?" Don Cherry, perhaps our most famous and patriotic Canadian, said today.

On his Saturday's Coach's Corner, he wept as he showed the pictures of the latest four soldiers.

But he did not want to bite on the bate from a low-rent American TV show.

"Pay no attention to it," said Grapes. "And don't give them any publicity."

He's probably right, but once something goes viral in this Internet world of ours, publicity is what it becomes. And on the backs of some dead soldiers?

Of course those on the panel will claim it was just a bit and an attempt at humour. But they should know there is nothing funny about war.

"That's not satire at all," an outraged OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino said, en route to escort home the latest fallen. "And they are saying this at a time when we are going to bring home our latest four heroes? It's appalling."

Fantino added he knows many Americans "and I have never, ever heard any of them speak like this."

He said he suspects this is isolated to this program which showed "vile disregard for our contribution"° and he finds the "ridiculous belittling" of Canada's costly effort "disgusting."

Even though it's not coming from official channels, it makes the flag flap of the 1992 World Series, where an honour guard had the maple leaf upside down, look small. This is so hurtful, I suspect President Obama may have to address it.

Canada, after all, is in this war because of its commitment to its NATO allies.

Of course nothing said on a television show at 3 a.m. should be taken too seriously but when a cut is stinging and a nation is mourning, anything said is like salt being poured on open wounds.

Will Fox see today that nothing will stand in the way of Canada's kind of pride? Will they own up to their nonsense and run pictures of the hearses on Highway of Heroes today and of all of the Canadian flags on the bridges or down at the Last Turn at the Ontario Coroner's office?

It doesn't really matter if they care. We care. And as they laugh at us, we make note we are kind of busy today repatriating our latest dead soldiers.

E-mail the Fox News' Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld at http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/News/Canada ... 54611.html

Very well said. I emailed them to express my objection and disgust.

They forget that Canada was in World War 1 and 2 from the outset, and that in the Great War nearly 10 percent of our small population was in the military. They forget that we were in Korea, and have participated in many UN and NATO missions around the world. They forget or are ignorant of the fact that we have been in Afghanistan since 2001, and have lost 116 soldiers, a diplomat and an aid worker there. They remember only that we did not participate in the misguided wars in Vietnam and Iraq. I believe our decisions then were correct.

It is reassuring to know that this show airs at 3am, when few people will be exposed to its crude, stupid, insulting and failed efforts at humour.

Fox "News" owes Canada an unqualified apology. I doubt they have the decency to offer it.

They didn’t “forget” any of that.

They’re on Fox - they get paid to be toxic and controversial. Take it from Cherry, who knows more than a little bit about the ratings boost you get when you say controversial things on TV - consider the source, let it pass and allow these guys to drift off into obscurity.

Why even bother emailing those idiots.

They aren't worthy of any sort of attention.

Why waste time on ignorant immature people?

Found the segment here: - YouTube

Looks like nothing more than a very poor attempt at comedy. Can't ever recall seeing such a collection of morons.

They're either really that stupid or trying to draw attention through controversy. Either way it's very distasteful.

I'd much sooner read the Enquirer than listen to those clueless children.

I fully support ANY kind of support our troops event. I think they deserve our support whether or not we agree with the mission they are involved in.

I won't get on my soap box, but I do believe we are as vulnerable to a terror attack as the US because the target is Western beliefs and we are an ally to the US which makes us an enemy to Bin Laden. As for those a-holes on Fox. I have never heard of any of them and couldn't care less what they have to say about our people who put themselves in harms way daily. They're disrespectful clods and I don't see them strapping on the gear.

Back to the topic "support our troops night" I'd love to see it happen (But not against CGY so I can wear my red "support our troops" shirt.

Support our Troop's Night is a great idea. The C.F.L has a historic connection to the Armed Forces . Don Cherry doing the coin toss and maybe showing all the names of the fallen Heroes of the Afghan War on the scoreboard .

Great idea...Canada Day might be a pretty cool day to do it, too.
