A little side note Garrett McIntrye (sorry I don't know the spelling) and Justin Hickman were both brought in by Obie. They now play in the NFL not much Obie can do about that. I think we need to remember that when we question each and every move he has made and whether of not he can judge talent still, toss in Thigpen well you're at it.
Hey. everybody gets lucky once in a while. But what has he done for the team lately. Specifically in replacing guys like that with similar talent. Teams like BC and Montreal seen to find good replacements when they lose star players and the teams keeps on rolling. Obie’s decent with picking up free agents but most of the players brought in through the scouting are mediocre at best.
Stevie Baggs is in Calgary now. Sometimes when guys who are used to starting can get cocky and have their work ethic challenged but once they are in the situation of being released and not assured a job they tend to change their attitudes when his job is on the line and the paychaeck or playing time is no longer a sure thing
Or...guys are misused.....its hard to get sacks when you're back in coverage! Stevie is a sack specialist and should have been used that way. When he was used properly, he excelled....ditto...Johnson and Knowlton....
Baggs got sacks when he played opposite a defensive end that was the true sack specialist. Chick in Saskatchewan & Hickman here in Hamilton. He is not a #1 DE.
http://cfl.ca/roster/show/id/3539/bio/ Not necessarily the stats of an all-star player who is going on his 9th team in 8 years now?
Maybe he'll do well in Calgary playing opposite Hughes. Signing is the first step of four. Still has to dress, play & perform. Take a gander at other cfl team & league posting boards & you'll see that I am not alone in being unimpressed & tired of Stevie's routine of talking a better game than he plays.
Since it was reported that Baggs was put on the Injured Reserve of the Ravens, and he SIGNED AN INJURE SETTLEMENT WITH THEM, I wouls assume that he would have to go through quite a rigorous physical with the Stamps doctors and training staff. If he's injured, maybe he should hang up his cleats for the rest of the season and try again next year.
Getting an injury settlement is really the old, "Apple & A Roadmap" saying.
Stevie was signed to league minimum @ 390K. When they injury reserved him it meant that his salary doesn't go towards the cap. By the Ravens offering him a settlement it's really saying that they don't seem him with their football club. The injury settlement was most likely sought by Stevie & his representation so that he can pursue other opportunities. If they Ravens saw any future potential with him, they would've let him sit on IR. Or the Ravens are saying even though your entry level salary doesn't count against the cap, we don't see any future with you. Here's some . Go away. Either way it's not much of a vote of confidence in Stevie's abilities.
I saw the play he was injured upon. It was nothing. Hamstring or something minor. It occurred on a play when he was coming around the end off the edge looking all good as usual while the play was forty yards away from him.
Nothing special about this situation it happens all the time in the NFL. As someone mentioned the Ravens really did not see him in their future plans so he and the Ravens were happy to settle on a cash settlement and both could move on. He has experience in the CFL and he is a good pass rusher. He will not be the #1 DE on Calgary so that suits him well. The injury seems to have been minor so if he can contribute to the Calgary DE rotation being effective playing a certain amount of games then Calgary will improve. If not he will be released and Calgary moves on without him.
He may surprise a lot of people and come out playing some good football. He is in a different situation as Calgary can take him or leave him it is up to his performance. His other experiences in the CFL are where he was brought in and expected to be the starter and he knew he would play so he could run his mouth or Whatever. He no longer has that luxury he either plays well or he doesn't play and he doesn't get paid either by the stamps.
