Why sign the ultimate journeyman so late in the season? If they want to send a message to Maier that is fine but what kind of message are you sending to the other 2 QB’s. If I’m Stevens I’m looking elsewhere next year.
I have had my eye on PJ Walker ever since June Jones turned him into the #1 QB in the XFL, with the Houston Roughnecks in 2020. I believe that season got interrupted by COViD, otherwise Walker would have been the first MVP/MOP of that fringe league (if they had such awards).
It has taken Walker a long time to find his way to the CFL, as he continued to pursue the NFL dream. He bounced around the NFL for the last few years, but did not experience a lot of success down there. Walker is undersized by NFL standards but he did spend time on Active rosters (as opposed to just spending time on the PS), so hopefully he has qualified for an NFL pension.
I am pretty sure that PJ Walker was on the Ottawa RedBlacks’ NegList when the XFL collapsed. I am not sure when they gave up on him allowing the Stampeders to sign him. It is good to see some more “new blood” arriving in the CFL at the QB position. I will be very curious to see if he finds success here in Canada.
But PJ Walker is going to be a 30 yr old Rookie next year (young by CFL QB standards??). As a Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ fan, I think I would rather have Taulia Tagovailoa on my roster as a future QB prospect.
The latest in quite a string of QBs on a western team who show enough as a backup to get some Eastern team to hand them the keys as anointed starter, only to fall flat on their faces.
Jonathan Jennings. . . James Franklin. . . Arbuckle. And the jury’s out on Dru Brown.
Im reading that when he was on 2020 in XFL, Steelers wanted to offerr him a contract but was not allowed, I thought those contracts always left open the possibility of going to the NFL at any time, maybe that would have been an opportunity for him, although he had other chances later
This guy has been on the CFL’s radar for quite some time. He was on Ottawa’s Neg list for a few seasons prior to this year.
This year, the Argos had him on their list and tried to sign him a few weeks ago, but Walker did not want to go to a team with a starter under long term contract.
The Stamps acquired him on a trade that wasn’t reported (not sure how that happens, but it’s the CFL so anything’s possible).
The question now becomes will he make an honest effort to learn the Canadian game or is he going to try to use this as a quick stop over between stints in the NFL. If it’s the latter, he won’t last.
Time will tell
I believe Mr. Walker has now exhausted his NFL options.
This is the constant dilemma for CFL GM’s when managing their NegList:
As a CFL GM, when placing a highly talented player on their NegList, the Best Case Scenario is that they have to wait for several years while that player clings to every slim chance of making an NFL roster… Of course the Worst Case Scenario is they earn a spot on an NFL roster. If the GM has the patience to wait for those opportunities to dissipate & eventually evaporate, then they still have to hope that player still has enough of a burning desire to continue to play Professional football, that they are willing to move to Canada to sign a Contract that is worth a small fraction of what they were hoping to earn in the NFL.
The fact that PJ Walker has witnessed the inside of the facilities at McMahon Stadium, and still put his John Hancock on a CFL Contract means that he still has a burning desire to play football. Of this, I can assure you . . .
The fact that John Hufnagel & Dave Dickenson were willing to trade for his CFL rights, indicates that they believe PJ Walker represents an upgrade at the QB position.
This part remains to be seen . . . probably not until 2025 !!
The Stamps are our sporting foes, but for the good of the CFL, I’m kind of excited about this already for next season.
As applicable to the quarterback position in any league and as many of you know from the Code of the Sea, a rising tide raises all ships that are seaworthy.
