stadium construction

With temperatures being up and down, they might also be concerned about the cold and how that could affect the paint’s drying process.

They are cutting the concrete and putting in expansion joints. That’s a lot of concrete dust flying in the air, put the plastic up to stop it covering everything in the area including seats, windows etc

I was listening to Talk 640 Radio yesterday afternoon in Toronto on the Jeff McArthur show and his guest was from the Ontario Tax Payers coalition talking about the Pan Am Games this summer and how far over budget the games are and problems with THF and how much money has been spent in delays on the stadium and contractors still waiting to be paid for work that has been completed and how much more still needs to be done.

The lady from the Tax Payers Coalition was saying that the original budget for the Pan Am Games when it was awarded to the city of Toronto in 2009 was $1.2 Billion but with ballooning costs, overruns, un-accoutable spending the final price will be around $3 Billion, currently the spending is around $2.4 billion with more to go and currently the games are only 25% sold for tickets and events.

Apparently the cost for security alone has risen considearably which was estimated around $200,000.00 on the original budget is more like $600,000 plus (Whoops little error on that)

Hopefully the work will be completed soon on THF but I'm sure the lasting memory of the Pan Am Games and the monies spent in the end will haunt us all for a long time to come!

Orange Ambulance....
Gas plants..
E health....
Pan Am overruns....
Did I miss anything?????

And you think we can trust them with $$$$$$billions for the Big Move?

Its become criminal!!

I can think of one you missed. The grand daddy of them all (in terms of costs to us) provincial mess-ups - the 407. Estimates are that we got at least $3 billion dollars less than what we should have on that deal with other estimates MUCH higher than that. Enough for multiple Hamilton LRT’s.

The market valuation of the highway was quoted to be several sums higher than the sale price of $3.1 billion. Some independent financial analysts were soon reporting that the highway was worth at least four times its sale price. This estimate was somewhat confirmed in 2002 when a 6% share in the 407 consortium, originally valued at $45 million, sold for $178 million.

In 2001, an Australian investor, Macquarie Infrastructure Group (investment bank), estimated the value of the road at $6.3 billion, or twice what it paid.

What made things even worse, is that within 9 years, the Consortium had easily paid off the costs it had put in for the highway, and essentially had a gold mine that would see windfall profits for the next 90 years.

Unfortunately governments of all stripes have blown billions over the years on all kinds of pet projects. THF from a cost to taxpayer perspective isn’t too bad compared to other public projects over the years. We should almost consider ourselves lucky.

Lucky is right TravelPatB

We got the show piece venue of the PanAm games built in Hamilton at a cost of $50M to the City,
for a $150M, 24,000 seat, modern, energy efficient, multi use, world class Stadium, that can host Grey Cups
in an area of the City that just does not see that kind of an investment and in a City that never sees this kind of investment from government. EVER!
The $50M put up by the City was from the Future Fund, so taxes won't go up one thin dime for this new facility.
IWS was falling apart, it was costing Hamilton Taxpayers a fortune in energy costs alone to run the place, and would have needed new turf, probably $5M-$7M, along with a huge list of deficiencies way too long to list.
If the Stadium wasn't built for the PanAm games we would not have got the Federal investment into the Stadium as the policy for Federal investment is for amateur sports facilities only.
PanAm games are another boondoggle, but Hamilton definitely comes out on the good side of the ledger on this.
PanAm games can use the Stadium for their 4 weeks and then they can go away.
The TiCats and the City will benefit for another 50 years.

I agree as a ST holder that we benefit. I've had ST for a almost 40 years and loved my seats at IWS. But I am appreciative of THF. Excellent place to watch football.
Where we really also got lucky was the Pam Am committee pulling the track events. Eliminated the track around the field thus getting us closer. Don't get me wrong. From a fan perspective, the track an field are likely the most diverse and interesting to watch but as a ST holder am happy the stadium has no track.

But I still think the government blew it with the entire build concept. It obviously has not worked. Even the head(s) of the Pan Am not only get paid $1/2 mill per year over the duration of the whole process but each walk away will a years salary as a severance payment!! And we're paying off two CEO's instead of one and the first joker was crossing the line as far as expenses go. Why a severance? Charge him with fraud!! Who else in this fiasco is getting severances or bonuses at the end? Maybe the Spec can do an investigative report for all to see a more detailed breakdown of costs.
Talk about more government waste.
And we voted these jokers in again, What is wrong with this picture?
Enough ranting!!! I love THF and glad we have it! :rockin:

And the Olympics could make those cost overruns look minor league.

Where I live (Mississauga), we get the Boston area TV stations as the American network affliiates. A few months ago they were trumpeting their application to be an Olympic host city. Now, some are becoming concerned about the possible costs and overages for this event.

Some have called the PanAm games the minor leagues of athletic competitions, with the Olympics being labeled as the “bigs”

While the Vancouver staging was a wonderful memory, I’m not convinced that it was money well spent.

The Pan Am Games might be over budget overall, but the Hamilton stadium portion is fixed-cost to the City and Games committee. I don't understand why all the construction projects for the Games were not done this way.

Some New Grafix Going Up

I agree that THF is not that large of an expense even with whatever over runs there may be when compared to the overall cost of the PanAm Games.

It will turn out to be a good place to watch football, soccer, etc.

But lets not kid ourselves, THF is not a world class facility, or your definition needs to change.

It is simply a decent value for the money spent, although perhaps that remains to be seen.

Compared to what was there before it’s a world class facility…

Its world Class for any $150 m Stadium

so is it done yet?

will it be done in April?

But lets not kid ourselves, THF is not a world class facility, or your definition needs to change
Well brad I've heard from someone's mouth who had a tennis scholarship at Tennessee or some state around there that the Rexall Centre isn't really "world class" for tennis. But I mean what is "world class"? Is Michigan Stadium "world class", I mean it fits 100,000 for college football games, not the NFL, and I believe it's all bench seating or mainly bench seating. But talk to some people and they would say "wow, unbelievable when I went to a game there with 100,000 people, unreal, world class all the way..." Hey I've been there with more the 100,000 but a bench is a bench is a bench. And I got in to see Michigan play Ohio State for $15.00 or around that much quite a few years back, forget the exact year.

Now let’s’ talk Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, is that a “world class” stadium the NFL loves to play Super Bowls at? Or the Rose Bowl? Are those “world class” stadiums? :?

Super Bowl stadium?

This is how bad Qualcomm stadium is

I went to the game today because I had nothing else to do and a couple tickets that would have gone unused otherwise. I don’t care about the Chargers, but football is football and tailgating is tailgating. Anyway, I’m at field level about 20 rows up and in the far endzone I see people looking up at something. What was it? A bunch of drunk guys pulled loose a section of railing - yes, railing - and were holding it up like a goddamn “defense” sign. I couldn’t see all that well from where I was at, but my brother in law was a few sections over from where this happened and apparently they just stood there and waved it around until security came. Oh and they were holding it on the edge of the level, so it very likely could have dropped down to the next level, potentially hurting someone… a lot.

I’ve heard of things falling loose before, but never a group of 20-something wannabe frat kids pulling loose the thing that’s supposed to keep you from falling over.

That stadium is an absolute dump, and then we have the “jumbotron.”

I fail to see the relevance of bring a stadium which opened on August 20, 1967 into this. Clearly not world class, as they are talking about replacing it or moving altogether.

Are you being ignorant on purpose? I can’t really tell…

So it went from "state of the art" to "world class"...?

brad, I'm not saying whether THF is "world class" or "state of the art" or whatever. I'm just referring to your statement that it isn't "world class" and I am suggesting that, assuming you are correct in whatever sense, even the NFL hasn't played their marquee championship game in fairly recent years in what is considered by some as a "world class" stadium.

So no intention on my part for deception if that is what you were getting at. :? And apologies if there is irrelevance on my part here.

My statement stands, it is not world class. It is a suitable stadium for the cities needs, that it is all it is. It still remains to be seen if it was a good value.

To your point about where Superbowls have been played, just proves my point yo are being ignorant. I still can’t tell if it is on purpose or not.

This is besides the point, I guess my only reason for posting in this thread was to state that it is potentially a good value for money stadium, and that is all it is and can be.

Any chance someone can grab a picture update? I'm curious how the exterior looks now that it is complete (I hope it is complete). Would like to see how the mesh screening turned out.
