This is a good signing by the TiCats as Watt's production has yearly been on the upside. Montreal's signing of Giguere is a bigger plus for the Als. We have had weakness at Canadian receiver for years and Giguere will be a huge plus for out team.
In 2014, Giguere had 520 yards in receiving. 337 of those 520 yards were YAC. That's almost 65% of his yards being earned after the catch. Watt had 92 in YAC on 356 total yards receiving. Roughly 26% YAC.
Giguere had almost as many yards gained after catch than Watt had in total yards in 2014.
As far as Watt being a better deep threat than Giguere, at no point in time over the last 3 years has Spencer had a longer reception than Sam. (49, 50, 33 versus 52, 61, 57)
Agree with you that Giguere isn’t as fast, but just saw a Gazette article which indicated that Popp thinks Sammy is is possible the fastest national receiver in the league! :o
please tell me he came in a lot cheaper than Sammy G woulda cost? please tell me he's just a back up to Fantuz and not starting due to being a Canucklehead.
Wow!! Surprising stats, Fender Guy. I would not have figured it that way.
Still, almost from the day her was signed, I had this feeling in my gut that Sam was truly wanting for Montreal.
Watt is 27 and Giguere is 30. Perhaps, that should be a factor in this discussion. Watt always seemed to be a factor in games against that blew team. As I recall, he got two of the touchdowns in the 2013 EF.
Sam Giguere should be a capable replacement for Deslauriers, who always looked ineffective to me.
Best wishes, Sam. Thank you for bringing your talents to Hamilton.
It really is bizarre. I agree with people who consider Giguere’s performance as a Ticat a disappointing, but there seems to be a lot of schadenfreude directed his way, excessive even by Hamilton standards.
The last 2 seasons Giguere has 2 TD's one TD each season
Watt has 6 TD's the last 2 seasons 3 TD's each season
YAC is a good Stat, TD Receptions is a much better one
My guess is that Watt got the $$$ that were earmarked for Sammy and that he turned down. I suspect that salary offer was a modest increase from what Giguere had been making and was in line with his role on the team. Austin has generally started two nationals @ receiver- Andy and Sam which means that Watt would be the 2nd national starter. Don’t worry that still leaves 3 international receivers (like Tasker, Banks, Sinkfield, Koch) to be on the receiving end of Zach’s passes!
He may be a former “arhol” but he has now “seen the light” and come to the good team! Anything to keep Zach pass-happy!
I’m somewhat concerned about having Koch as a starter. To me, he seems to be the weak link on your list. I would feel much better if Grant’s name was there instead.
Giguere’s contract was $120k/season, so you can blow THAT rumour out of the water. MY opinion, FWIW, is that the “modest increase” was in the $5-10K range, and Sam would play in the same position. If I were Sam, I would take that offer as a slap in the face, and refuse it as well. As previously stated by Drew, Sam wanted to be able to contribute to the offence more than he has in the past. To me, that means he is politely asking to play either SB or near-side WR (Bakari’s position).
Perhaps after next season, once his one-year contract is over in Montreal, we will see how poor our National receiver depth is. No offence to Aprile and Coates, but they have shown NOTHING in real-life gameplay (Coates ecpecially). Giguere, by that point, may become a VERY attractive (wink) Fantuz replacement (since, you know, his contract is up at the end of this season, and we can’t see into the future). Or he may fail in Montreal. Or he is the second coming of Ben Cahoon.
It doesn’t matter, because this thread is to celebrate the signing of Spencer Watt.
Not sure where FenderGuy gets his stats - I didn’t think the CFL kept a tally of YAC yards (Can’t find them on CFL.ca or ticats.ca). Love to know the source.
My opinion comes from being a season ticket holder and watching Giguere for three years fail to live up to expectations. Don’t remember ever once seeing him make a move to get past a defender with the ball in his hands. His trademark seems to a quick step out of bounds. I’m excited to see what Watt can do.

Im with you on this cant remember one Giguere highlight where he breaks a defender or makes a great open field move or clearly just outruns anyone or muscles through someone and keeps going… I expected him to go terminator on everyone here when i first saw him but nope not really once, not a big block or anything… hate him or not Chris Williams and his chicken bone arms and his gotta be like 50 less pounds could run through people with pure power better than Sam ever did… ditto Archie Amerson and Marcus Thigpen real beasts with football functional muscle.
