Should the CFL season start earlier in the year?

But its almost broken and we have to improve it especially in Southern Ontario.
We are lucky that we have owners like Bob Young and David Braley that are the real saviours of CFL football. The fans just aren’t doing their part.
Toronto and Hamilton the two biggest markets in the country are struggling to attract fans. Why do much smaller cities in the US draw 60,000 or 70,000 fans to NFL games. Why are there Huge ratings in the US for NFL and huge rating in Canada for the NFL.
Why do 30,000 or so fans from the area go to Buffalo for Bills games, why do 50,000 in the area show up for Bills games in Toronto.
We can’t just keep limping around like this - we know that Calgary, Sask, Edm, Win and Montreal are doing a great job, just look at the pre-season attendance in those cities. What is the excuse for Toronto - 12,000 at their last game or Hamilton with around 19,000 (announced)

Answer - a lot of people who could be potential CFL football fans in southern Ontario don't appreciate what is under their nose, they are too busy trying to identify themselves with everything born, raised and bred in the USof A. You even have well educated very rich influential people like Phil Lind and Paul Godfrey under the "USA sports spell." and they are right here in our own backyard. So it's easy for joe blow Canuck out there to just go with the Lindy Godfrey type blow flow and make themselves feel important because it's American.

Not to say I don't like watching the Blue Jays and the American leagues but man, we have a treasure here in the CFL that just requires a few brain cells to appreciate. But in southern Ontario, these brain cells for the average person, and CFL fans are not average or ordinary in any way, shape or form, the US is so close it's easy to get TOTALLY sucked in hook, sink and anchor sort of thing and forget about Canada.

CFL fans are smarter and more broadly educated and world minded regardless of the amount of formal schooled education they have, they have what I like to call "worldly presence" and that could be someone who never got past grade 6 who can barely read.

And to top it off, fans who can barely read, CFL fans, synergize with PHD sorts who are CFL fans. Both totally "get it". A melding of intelligencia from polar opposites, that's what I love about CFL fans, anywhere.

Earl

You don't have to bash Americans to make a point. You have to bash Canadians for not coming out to CFL games.
I live in the US for half the year and love it and love the people.
I do get annoyed at Canadians that try to blame the US for problems that they have made for themselves. If Toronto wants to have an NFL team its because Canadians living there want it, don't blame Godfrey or anyone else for giving them something they want.
It's up to more Canadians to stand up, buy tickets and attend CFL games and watch it on TV to increase ratings.
It's as simple as that.

Earl I can’t agree more and this is also why originally I was attracted to this forum. As one of the Americans enjoying the CFL as well, perhaps you can imagine I get an awful lot of blank stares from both sides of the border.

Also noteworthy I have noticed is that Canadian CFL fans themselves seem to know more about NFL football and soccer and are able to comment on them intelligently more than I estimate 90% of NFL fans or soccer fans elsewhere!

I am not kidding have a look at any given NFL or soccer blog include even on the NFL and FIFA sites! You won’t have to look long at the comments as most of them are just mindless cheering and rants with most of those folks with nothing of value to say or add otherwise.

I’d like to be optimistic and assume they have brains they could use instead, but well … :stuck_out_tongue: With most sports blogs any more it is as if we are reading the transcript of any given local television news interview of any given uninformed bojack local homer.

Here at least agree or disagree with folks most have something to contribute of novelty or value to the discussion so much of the time.

I’m not bashing Americans at all, they should love their country and many do. And I don’t blame Godfrey, all I’m saying is many people find it easy to follow an influential type person, and Godfrey is that.

As I say, I like watching the NFL, MLB, NBA (well not sure about basketball  ) and the NHL but I love our own CFL for what it is and the history behind it etc. I don’t have to do what small minded Godfey did and say publicly “I’m an NFL guy”. I don’t go around saying “I’m a CFL guy”. I’m a sports guy and I can appreciate all leagues even those that I don’t understand the sport and thier supposed enterainment value ie. MLS or NBA. I don’t say “I’m a CFL guy” to try and put down these leagues I don’t get all that much or any leagues.

Godfrey said it and once you say something,it’s out there and you can’t take it back. Godfrey is a small minded person for all his money and influential type person he is. You may disagree but quite frankly, I don’t care.

I'll vouch readily for Earl, as well as most commenters I know on here, on this point from day one.

And at least for those who don’t care for Americans all the same, they leave that off here and just stick to football mostly anyway.

Otherwise it is like anything else anywhere in the world with the few bad apples and jerks on any given other matter as well.

Yes Paolo and per capita, Canada has just as many bad apples here as the US or any other country in the world. I love our country and I'm glad we have a super neighbour in the US but Canada being very small compared with the US, I try and make a special effort to appreciate some of our smaller things we have here. Ok, CFL is easy for me to like since I love football but even some of our small bands that aren't big or won't get much play time in the US or other countries, I try and seek some of them out and get into those that I kinda like their music.

And I like your beer overall better there too and your whisky is awesome though of course I’ll trade you shots of fine bourbon for it too.

And geez if you have more Pamela Andersons you are not exporting, and peameal, and more rugby than here, and so on and so forth …one benefit I’ll have moving south to Florida by August is ironically I’ll meet more Canadians down there!

And of course when I get the chance to rig a Slingbox to their TV service with pirated CFL action well …

I’m on a mission from God to quote yet another fine Canadian you know! :cowboy:
