Ottawa RedBlacks get some Lemon-aid
BY TIM BAINES, OTTAWA SUN
The Ottawa RedBlacks wanted a dominating defensive lineman and they were thrilled when they landed a Lemonator.
Defensive end Shawn Lemon (Twitter handle @SLemonator), who had 13 sacks and 31 tackles for the Calgary Stampeders last season, verbally agreed to a contract with the RedBlacks on Wednesday. Now it's just a matter of getting everything in writing and getting Lemon into Ottawa for a physical. The RedBlacks, who are in a bye week, expect to have him on the field when they begin practising again next week.
It's believed the bidding war for the free agent, who left the Stampeders to give the NFL a try, came down to three teams -- the RedBlacks, B.C. and Winnipeg. With a knee injury that will knock Aston Whiteside out for the remainder of the season, the RedBlacks were looking to bring in a player who could bring plenty of pressure from the edge.
"He's an explosive pass rusher -- a difference maker off the edge," said RedBlacks GM Marcel Desjardins. "This wasn't a need a week ago, but things change quickly in this league. We had some flexibility under the (salary) cap. You always have to have an emergency fund."
Lemon, who was with both the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers, played two seasons after Calgary after getting released by both Saskatchewan and Edmonton. The 6-foot-2, 250-lb., defender had a huge 2014 season; he was also responsible for eight forced fumbles.
The RedBlacks will have Lemon under contract through the 2016 season.http://www.ottawasun.com/2015/09/02/ott ... -lemon-aid?
