Als fans certainly have to thank him for the part he played in our winning the Cup.

Great player, played a pivotal role in our Grey Cup run, made players around him better. Glad he’s going out on his terms. Replacing him will be very difficult.

I can’t remember so many players ever retiring in an off season ever across the league.

Wow! We lose Uguak AND Lemon on the defensive line. That’s tough!

Yeah, three key pieces of the 2023 team gone – Uguak, Lemon, and Mack. Maas will have his work cut out for him this season, no doubt.

Maciocia too with this announcement.

Best wishes to Shawn for a healthy and happy retirement … the only complaint anyone could make is that any 2023 money used last December to extend him to a lower-cap-hit 2024 contract could have been used to save money on another veteran player’s contract for this coming season … but I doubt Lemon had any inkling in the post-Grey Cup euphoria that he might decide to retire.

Wow this one hurts. Hope that some of the signings step up. Lemon transformed the D.

I think Maciocia should give Leonard a shot. He is coming off his best season, he’s older but in great shape. He’s not the Locker Room character Lemon is but they won’t find that anyway.

The fact he is unsigned might have to do with these things.

BlockquoteAccording to 3DownNation.com’s John Hodge, Leonard was due a $40,000 roster bonus on Wednesday. Hodge also reported that Leonard was scheduled to be the league’s highest paid defensive lineman in 2023.

or this

BlockquoteLeonard was suspended that season for two games for failing to supply a sample for drug testing. The suspension was extended by another game for verbal abuse and unacceptable behaviour towards a doping control officer.

In December the enthusiasm of the Grey Cup win convinced him he wanted to play … assuming there is not something that has not yet been revealed, April led to him realizing that some combination of his head/body/heart just wasn’t ready to prepare for training camp and a full season … MIGHT he (can he?) unretire come fall?

I was thinking the same thing.

As @Jocko said a few days ago, this kind of thing happens at this time of year. Training camp gets near and a player realizes that his heart, head, and/or body aren’t up for another punishing season. Lemon had nothing but good things to say about the team and coach Thorpe, and signed an extension in December, so to me it’s just about him realizing he didn’t have the fire in him to play another season.

Would not be the first time a player decides to come out of retirement.

Or yes, he simply decided it was time.

Oh yeah, not ruling that out. Maybe Lemon decides he can’t take watching for one more season midway through 2024 and gives Danny a call.

Life goes on… He made a great contribution but that was last season. The Als just got younger…
