**Selling football players in a hockey nation

i think the All-Star game COULD work…i’d like to see the Damon Allen QB challenge held b4 the game ( like the NHL/ NBA skills comp ) with ONLY the leagues starters, and the QB’s with the most points get the start…

example: top 4 QB’s this year were damon allen, kerry joseph, ricky ray, Calvillo…so the first half would see kerry joseph start for the west and damon allen start for the east, and second half, ricky ray for the west and calvillo for the east…would make the QB challenge more interesting.

that would be accepting failure…its better the league improve itself and be more professional, to earn that image, than just accepting defeat…your idea is like saying: oh well, my grades suck, but im still not gonna study for the next test.

…and ‘minor league’ is an insult to the geroy simons, stegalls, bruces and cahoons of this league.

The league does little or nothing to promote the talents of its players. Announcers tend to focus more on which NFL team the player got cut from rather than focusing on the player's physical talents, or how big of a star the player was in college. Its seems silly but how can we as fans be sold on these players when we are reminded week after week how second rate they are by our own announcers!

dg, think outside-the-box. How about slogans as, just a start here:

CFL - not too big to lose touch with the fans or too small to not be noticed

CFL in your community, just minorly perfect I'd say!

u could say goodbye to my interest.

earl, i think u dont even know what u want…one week u talk about small stadiums, then the next week u talk about 50K seaters, then the next week, u want little sized stadiums again.

Well, good luck in your vision to get the CFL to the point where we have those beautiful new stadiums popping up in NFL cities, by the time that ever happens here if it ever did, I'll be long gone in the grave. And the CFL will be merged with the NFL and have one or two cities from Canada in the league.

thats not my vision at all…just cuz i posted an article found online doesnt make that my vision…( the only reason i posted that article was to show the NFL has strong desire to work with the CFL and not put a nfl team in T.O. to hurt the cfl )

ive said many many times, stay in canada, expanding to Quebec city, halifax then ottawa ( but reverse order is ok, too ) with 30K-35K seat minumums for NEW stadiums.

combine this expansion with the player marketing ideas i came up with, and an all-star game/qb skills comp ( see below ), along with a CFL videogame, i think elite cfl players would be more household names.

Ok, I admit you have a point here, I'll grant you that. And I think in a way my thoughts reflect many others about the league, it's difficult to pin point exactly what is wanted or needed in every community in Canada that could have a team in the CFL, we are so diverse and with a small population it's very difficult. But 30,000 is too many seats, you're never going to get to a 12 team league with that many. 20,000, I think I'm finally coming to the conclusion, is a better starting point and expand the stadium to 25,000-30,000 if warranted.

I like the points you make for marketing the league more, excellent!!

There are simply not enough markets in Canada for a 12-team league.

The CFL is struggling to draw in the cities it has, there is no way it will do anything in cities like London!

No, Canada can only sustain 11 teams at max, 12 with Windsor.

Carefully thought out US expansion is the way to go if the CFL is to grow. It would be risky, but worthiwhile if it worked.

Depends TorontoIsMyHome, while I’m fine with 8 myself, I don’t think that 12 is out of the question, but it does depend on so many things like salary cap, imports, owners etc.
But a 10 team league is a realistic vision for the next 5 years I think, anything beyond 5 years is just “who the heck knows what” type of thing.

I agree.

12 Canadian teams is out of the question.

Bring in a team in Halifax and bring Ottawa back for 10.

Then maybe bring in a team in Detroit and perhaps Portland.

....taking that outside of the box thinking to the next level, it is clear that what this league needs is larger markets to sustain four more teams.....I say we concentrate on expanding the population of a few more cities in the country to effectively handle the opening of a CFL franchise......too much emphasis is being placed on why these cities can't handle a franchise, we must address the source of the problem itself with the easiest solution: add more fans.....

Excellent idea R&W, lets tell Immigration Canada to let everyone know in Lebanon that they are welcome here, no strings attached, as long as they go to these cities and become season ticket holders for the CFL teams.
That is out-of-the-box thinking, I think anyways.

.....the other problem this league faces is the clear lack of interest in the sport from the 13 to 15 year old female demographic....I know for a fact that my 14 year old daughter thinks football totally suques......but this powerful spending group has the potential of taking the league to the next level......start a sales campaign led by Lindsay Lohan and Hillary Duff beating the crap out of each other while dressed as an Edmonton Eskimo and a Calgary Stampeder and before long we would see ticket sales rise....stadiums could agument their concessions with Ardene outlets strategically placed around their concourses and each stadium could anchor their entry gates with say a Gap store or an American Eagle franchise......

LOL! That’s a brilliant idea!

You should e-mail the CFl about it!

You do have a very clever mind there I must say, very much out of the ordinary I will say. Sure you don't run a marketing agency of some sort somewhere?

....nope, I'm just bored in the office on a Wednesday afternoon....

The CFL needs to be more visible in the off-season to promote the game. I think a good idea would be to have a website in which players are part of the equation, and fans can ask them what they think about a particular issue or have them give their thoughts to fans on games, replay issues etc.... especially during the winter when they arent as visible to the fans.

Sambo that is already done well in Calgary anyways!
The players and the teams need to do more in being visible in the community. The networks needs to do a better job as well with exposure. Ron Rooke is a good start!
