Sam Etcheverry has died

"MONTREAL -- Former Montreal Alouettes quarterback Sam Etcheverry has died at age 79 following a lengthy battle with cancer.

The team announced Etcheverry's death Saturday in a press release.

Etcheverry, who spent the majority of his career with the Alouettes, was one of the most dominant quarterbacks in the CFL during the 1950s.

Nicknamed "The Rifle," he led Montreal to three straight Grey Cup appearances and was named the league's top quarterback in 1954.

Two years later, he became the first quarterback in league history to pass for more than 4,000 yards in a season.

Following a short stint in the NFL, the six-time all-star returned to the Alouettes as a coach and led the team to the 1970 Grey Cup championship.

Etcheverry was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1969."

A true legend. He will be missed.

Oski Wee Wee,

He was indeed a legend, and a remarkable quarterback. A credit to the game.

Glad that I had the opportunity to see him play. RIP

Man that awful news

and of course

he was almost a Ticat...

the trade was never completed....

and he ended up a st louis cardinal

and a Grey Cup winning coach on his return to the Als

truly a great quarterback,,,,, i was a kid sitting in the "then new" east stands as I watched the Rifle toss a beauty to Prince Hal against the Ticats... a touchdown n'est pas? but in the end... all is forgiven Sam :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

A true CFL legend, God Bless him and his family.

Rest in Peace, Rifle; you were a magnificent quarterback. Thanks for a million great plays and memories.

Rest In Peace, Rifle.

Sam could make a pass defense look very bad, one of the best QBs to play in this country. :frowning:
