Running Attack

How about some younger O Linemen (maybe that are NOT former Bombers) that can actually open holes?

Agreed - running game sucks. I mean if Durant is passing for 500 yards in a given game - yeah we don't have to worry too much about how many yards we can run for. But when the game is going like it did against TO - change things up a bit - put 2 or even 3 guys in the backfield. Nothing is worse than continuing to do the same things over and over again when they aren't working.

In all fairness to the Riders, they have found ways to win those close ones this year. The passing game did show signs it was ready to explode at points in that game. Had it not been for our special teams getting torched on three plays with 5 minutes, we probably would have pulled that game out as well.

Its not like our running game isnt working. Cates is still averaging over 5 yards per carry, with 14 touchdowns. There is obviously a reason they arent using Charles more… might have to do with fumbleitis when he carrys the ball.

Yes, but fans know better than the coaches.

Before labourday Cates had 102 carries for 622 yds for a 6 yd av and 8 tds in 8 games, after and including labourday Cates had 55 carries for 201 yds for a 3.6 yd av and 6 tds in 6 games, 200 yds in the first 2 games.
200 in first 2 then 400 next 6 and finaly 200 his last 6 so as stated in a quote by coach Berry that we have not been able to accomplish running the ball then maybe coach Berry had better look at the running plays that HE is calling or is it possibly that the offensive line is not good enough to run the ball ???

so if coach Berry is correct in his annalysis what will the last 4 bring ?? the way were regressing ??? I don’t even want to think about it.

protect your QB at all costs and put the fear of god in theirs  and this is what we are not doing

Or you go to something that is working… that is the passing game. Durant has been carving up defenses since Banjo Bowl (other than the Toronto game, which I believe was a direct cause of the second game in the home and home). If it aint broke dont fix it. 6 touchdowns in 4 games from Cates is still nothing to be ashamed of.

I note that the mighty Boyd got a whopping 26 yards on 11 carries for a stellar 2.4 yd average. It happens to all of them sometimes.

I would like the Riders to use Dressler to run to the outside and maybe open up the middle a bit.At the start of the season we were doing that and kind of stopped and just Cates up the middle on every run play.

I, like many others here have previously stated, am disappointed in our offensive coach.

The Riders are very predictable. There was one game I watched when Cates actually was given a pitch wide. Nearly spilled my beer because I hadn't seen that previously. Not certain I've seen it since. It seems we have little in the way of imagination, we do not run the ball much, and when we do it's duh ..... up the middle..... again.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy the passing game. I enjoy seeing no protection and having a chance for quick reads. Problem is been there and done that. All other teams in the CFL know what we do. Have about a surprise or two. A pitch here and there? Come on!

Did you watch the game? Boyd injured his ankle in the first quarter and was pretty much a one legged running back the rest of the game.

Yes, I did and yes he did.

Think his injury might have made him less effective than when healthy?

Well after that lose to Calgary, my question is answered. You can't win a GC without a balanced attack. Calgary showing us how to play the game. Run, run, run and throw when you have too. Embarassing effort by the Riders after the first two posessions. Totally out coached in all areas of the game. Some old play calling. Give to Cates, get 3 yds, throw ball hope for first down. Calgary took out Fantuz, our Oline can't get any gaps, in a blitz DD holds onto the ball way too long, etc, etc. Calgary took their formula and proofed in this game they can beat us. We don't have another game to see if we have a winning formula against Calgary. Sad, sad day

If we are fortunate enough to wind up in the Grey Cup game in Edmonton we better have a running game. By that time of year the weather in Edmonton could be down right nasty and you better have a ground game.

I have to agree, can’t expect the mild weather they had in Calgary last year. At least the grass is gone.
