Maybe, an amendment to the Rouge rule should be made, Yes I said it. Considering the advances in place kicking distances for todays kickers
(Helium inflated balls?) Maybe the Rouge should not be awarded for a missed field goal that travels through the end zone that are attemted from within the 35 yard line ?
I like the rouge
BUT
Kicking the ball out of the playing field for a single point on a e point attempt has gotta change.
The opposing should have to concede the single or the attempt gets the big zerro for a miss… Same a doink but not through
Count me in the camp of liking the premise of the rouge but don’t like the dead ball rouge.
The kicking team should have to stop the returning team in goal to get a point.
If anything it would add a little more strategic thinking to it.
I’ve been saying this for years. A rouge needs to be conceded in the end zone. Balls kicked through the end zone shouldn’t count.
As previously mentioned, at minimum, the receiving team needs to be able to atleast return or concede the single. I just think that the way it is now, it’d be a brutal way to win/lose a Grey Cup game, or even a playoff game.
Yes losing a GC by unforced conceding a Rouge was brutal, “fnMeow fnMeow” ,re George Carlin. The previous suggestions are good but how about just banning gimme field goals inside the 35 yard line? Now that the hash marks are in the middle of the field.
Some of us have been saying this about the rouge for the last couple of decades, but the CFL just isnt listening. The same should be for punts
Rather than remove all rouge rewards from the game, and continue to allow gimme field goals why not just prohibit the offense from electing to kick, punt or placekick, once they have been awarded a 1st down inside the oppositions 30 yard line. Three downs to achieve another 1st down or a touchdown becomes the only option from that point. Failure to score becomes a turnover at the point of termination of the last offensive play. No cheap wins from play late in the games. Surely those who subscribe to the “rewarding for failure” theory must agree to this further sterilization of our cool game.
At the same time, the kickoff after a scoring play should be eliminated. Presently the team that was scored upon is overly rewarded with opportunity to scrimmage with good field position when play continues after a score. Too often kicks are easily returned to the returning teams 40+ yard line. The team that’s scored on should have to really earn their way down the field. After a scoring play the ball should always just be scrimmaged by the other team from their own 25 yard line. (This would also reduce game injuries.)
naaahh
If they can change the rules and eliminate the single point in OT then they can eliminate the single point in regulation time
Winning a game by missing a field goal is stupid. Change the rule. No rouge for balls that sail out of the end zone. Only if the other team’s returner catches the MFG and takes a knee or is tackled in the end zone.
How did they eliminate the single point in OT?
I think what gets people going is changing the rule based on the fact that a game ended that way, which only happens every 3 years or so.
Change the rule all the time. Not just in the last 3 minutes, not just at the end of games.
All rouges (punts or FGs) must be fielded to be a point. Just like kickoffs are.
Kickoffs out the back with no touch are not singles.
I would amend that to include balls that hit the ground before bouncing out
I disagree. A ball that rolls out is not a point, because it’s also live. If a returner wants to stand there and stare at the ball he risks it being recovered by the kicking team
The returning team has the opportunity to field the ball, unlike a ball the clears the endzone … I-M-O should still be a point.
They changed this rule in 2023. Kickoffs no longer need to be touched to score a rouge, bringing them more in line with the other types of kicks.
I’m just reading this now…
So on a windy day, a team can sail kickoffs out the back of the endzone and get a point…
Impressive. They’ve managed to make the rule worse.
Yes. Last week it happened. I can’t remember which game off hand. Up until then I hadn’t realized that the rule had been changed.
