Roughing The Kicker

That roughing the kicker penalty on Sean Thomas Earlington is the worst call I have ever seen!

Easily can change it back to the old rule next season.

As well it should be! If you touch the ball first, it should not be contacting or roughing the kicker. In this case the ball was either still touching Grace’s foot or just inches from it. What is a person blocking the kick in that situation supposed to do? If he had been a fraction of a second later, the ball would have gone over him and he would have gone under the kicking leg and missed the plant leg.

I edited the title of this thread to hopefully promote some meaningful discussion surrounding the Roughing the Kicker penalty called tonight.

why? touch the ball or dont touch the ball, the kicker still needs to be protected

But if the player is already committed to the blocking off the ball there’s nothing he can do about it.

It’s a judgement call in that situation.

Despite falling, I didn’t see Sean Thomas Earlington hitting his plant foot. Bit of an illusion because the punter did a flip but there was no contact with his plant foot.

yes there is. Take the right angle.

By far one of the worst calls of the year. When the command centre interjects and everyone is shocked you know they should just stay out of it.

sometimes the majority is not right

It was a terrible call. Seen punts blocked like that forever. Insanity.

I’ll post my thoughts from last nights game thread for those who missed it and are interested;

I just went back and watched the roughing the kicker call and I think the Command Center got it wrong.

The rusher definitely makes contact with Grace’s kicking leg but doesn’t actually hit his plant leg. The momentum of having his kicking leg batted down actually moved his plant leg out of the way of the blocker and it doesn’t get touched.

And it’s not a Contacting the Kicker penalty if you’ve touched the ball first.

That shouldn’t have been a penalty. FWIW I still believe that if you do actually hit the plant leg, it should be a penalty, that’s just not what happened here.

And;

Also just because I’m looking into it now;
The announcers said the rule changed to any contact with the kicker is a penalty regardless of if you block the ball first or not, but I’m pretty sure they’re dead wrong. This is what I found in the 2024 rule book;

New rule! to protect kickers, if you block the punt you can’t hit the kickers leg.
The old rule was that once you touched the ball you could take out the kicker.

In the heat of the moment the player doesn’t have time to take an angle. He’s focused on the ball, not intentionally nailing a player.

In any case that rule might be reviewed at the end of the season.

I didn’t like the call, but for the safety and security of the punters, how can it be changed?

I want to say, “Make it a referee judgement call (i.e., unnecessary roughness),” but it may result in kickers diving and flailing away.

It was the wrong call.
