Rogers to Buy out Bell from MLSE

Argo fans that want MLSE out, you may get your wish.

Cost reported of 4.7 billion.

Larry Tannanbaum will still own the 20% with OMERS owning the other 5.

I always thought the purchase would be other way around.

How this will affect the Argos…or other teams remains to be seen

Hard to imagine Rogers wants the Argos. Their position on the CFL is well known.

Yeah the future may be uncertain unless they get a part of the next media deal. Rogers has nothing to do with MLS either.

Makes sense why they haven’t had a president for either team for a while.

Interesting because Bell CTV - TSN has secured rights for the next 20 years for the Leafs and Raptors (MLSE). But now Rogers a CTV/TSN competitor has bought MLSE. TSN holds all broadcast rights for the CFL

Just what the Argos need: uncertainty about ownership. Crikey.

Nothing uncertain about it at all a new owner, Rogers has bought MLSE (Leafs, Raptors, Argos, Marlies) - Rogers now owns the Jays, Leafs, Raptors, Argos, Marlies.

Not sure if it will make any difference if TSN secured rights for 20 years. However, contracts with the CFL will be renewed over that period.

Renewal of the CFL contract due in 18 months, before the 2026 season. Likely the same terms and the bonus if ratings rise.

Not certain Ambrosie or the CFL have much choice … the Argos were not sold, their owner was sold …

Yeah. Have a queesy feeling about this.

May take a couple years but Rogers will essentially sell off the Argos and/or TFC.

Yeah I think it will depend on what they sell. If they sell both, along with the operating rights I can see them being still in good hands.

MLSE’s lease with the city runs to 2037 so still lots time on that front

I used to work for a company owned by Mclean Hunter, I still remember Rogers himself swearing to the CRTC that the company wouldn’t be broken up and sold.
To that point they had divested themselves of 80+% of Mclean Hunter…

“It will be a seamless transition” is the modern code-phrase before this sort of thing happens.

As an employee, on only ONE occasion in my life,
and that’s on my current job though it was still rough-going well into 2022 the first full year after completion of acquisition,
did I experience a net positive after my employer was acquired by another company.

In any case, such are times to definitely start looking some place else whenever your employer, bank, rental unit, management company, et cetera are acquired by some other firm usually managed by cutthroat people whom you’ll never know or meet anyway.

Why? TFC is a huge money maker.
Rogers also acquires the Air Canada Centre from MLSE
