Was fired during one of the worst periods of Ticat football... Then Ron Lancaster brought him back, to help win a Grey Cup.

No ego. No bad blood.

Definitely. Came back to be Lancaster’s def. co- ordinator after being fired in ‘97. Must have been pretty awkward for him but he and the team handled it well and flourished.

For sure on that. Highly admirable on his part.

RIP Sudsy, True TiCat Legend. :tiger:

Although he never wore double blue, nothing but respect for the man. He was a straight shooter and his defences simply played hard nosed football. And you could tell his players would go through a wall for him. RIP.

He actually did wear double blue . His final year playing was in 1970 with Toronto .

Sutherin once held the CFL distance record for the longest field goal:

Sept. 17, 1962 - Don Sutherin 48 yards (Hamilton @ B.C.)

His record was tied by Winnipeg's George Fleming in 1963. Fleming broke the mark with a 55 yarder in 1964. Fleming passed away on December 6, 2021.

R.I.P.

Sutherin coached Steinauer while he played in Hamilton (1997-99), and presumably had a big influence on OS's career. Perhaps Orlondo still carries many of those early lessons and coaching techniques with him. It's also interesting that our current coach is basically two degrees of separation from most of the Ticat greats of the past 60 years.

Another great player from those great 60’s Ti-Cats teams passes away but the memories live on. Condolences to his family.

Those mid 90's teams were pretty bad; was so happy when he joined the little General to go to back to back Grey Cups and win one.
RIP coach.

A good, entertaining, tribute article, by ""Jonesy" about "Sudsy," who had a first year in Canadian football, Tim White like moment in the CFL's first season, over 60 years ago:
