It's so frustrating to watch this broken record. Is it a punishment for the people of Saskatchewan, why does it happen time and again?? So many teams don't have the support that we give to the Riders, yet they continuously do better. And to lose like this on our centennial is unbelievable. One first down I think in the 3rd quarter? With this offense is an embarrassment. We got to get over this come back kid mentality and get one like we had with Kent Austin of dominating the game.
My heart is broken, again. 1 GC every 33.333 years. 1 every 25 years looks ridiculous on paper but I'd take that right now in a heart beat. As someone else posted, I hope my kids someday see a Grey Cup win when they are old enough to understand it.
Hopson, your going to start bleeding away support if you don't do something to correct whats been happening. And the guys on the BOG had better be replaced with people who are knowledgeable with football, as in they have played or coached. And not just be the friend of a friend that blindly is appointed.
And this is where I think Tim Burke came up with an outstanding game plan to neutralize Durant, Fantuz, & co. Rather than play our typical straight man coverage and make it easy for Darian to go through his reads, we played a lot of zone, and what’s more, we disguised our zone drops very effectively throughout the whole game. As a result, we took away the big play / deep ball (except for the one big bomb to Fantuz where we WERE playing man and got burned), and we forced Sask to put together long drives using the intermediate and short passing game.
Darian is a tremendous talent, but Sunday’s game showcased the areas where he needs to improve. Going forward, he has to show more patience and take what the defense gives him, and he has to improve his ability to read coverage and not be deceived by pre-snap disguises. This is where you can see the difference between a young gun in just his second year as a starter (Durant) and a grizzled 17-year veteran who’s seen just about every defensive wrinkle under the sun (Calvillo).
All that said, I feel the Rider receivers let Darian down. Getzlaf and Clermont were largely invisible, and Fantuz wasn’t terribly consistent: he had a couple of big plays, but he also went offsides at a crucial moment in the fourth quarter, negating a Durant scramble. No disrespect to Fantuz and Getzlaf: they’re young players still learning how to elevate in pressure situations (just like Durant). Clermont is a gamer but past his prime. Having Bagg in the rotation would have helped a lot.
